How do you adapt your scrum team to changing priorities?

I've worked with various people in different jobs for a while. Most of us don't like changes, and Scrum teams don't like to change their plans or switch tasks in the middle of their work. The first thing to do is to figure out why this task is so important. The best way is to use data to make decisions. Then, I tell the teams why we need to change our priorities. One important thing for success is to always talk to the team and remind them that it's normal for priorities to change in agile. If I come with new priorities, they know it's something really important.

In my experience whether you are working in an Agile organization or a more traditional "Waterfall" organization there are two questions that are a constant. 1) When can I have it? 2) How much is it going to cost? Hopefully any requested changes come in the come in the form of feedback from regular feedback from customers and stakeholders. If we use metrics that matter to our Customers and Stakeholders, we will be in a better position to inform them how their changes might effect milestones and deadlines. That being said, a Scrum team should understand that changes will come. Empowering members of the Scrum team to communicate honestly can help when adjusting the expectations of our Customers and Stakeholders so they can deliver value.

Assessing the why each time feels valuable, but it should always come to the same answer. The impact / value of this is higher than the other things that were in your backlog. In that sense it is just a continued evolution / grooming of your backlog.

In my experience, while negotiating the "what" of a change request is like picking out a Lego set you want to build, the fun part is figuring out how to build it! Managing the "how" is following the Lego instructions (or implementation plan)! One thing I've found helpful is not being afraid to improvise! Even the best Lego builders sometimes need to adjust their approach and adapt to challenges. Hold regular team check-ins to inspect progress and make adjustments to the plan as needed. This keeps your project on track and ensures a successful outcome (and a Lego masterpiece)!

I will add though that change and agile go hand in hand- this is where the 'Agile Mindset' comes in - adjusting mindsets to welcoming change ( as mentioned in the principles of Agile) serves as a powerful force to successfully accommodate/manage and ultimately implement the change ( as disruptive as it may originally seem). Whilst all the aspects mentioned in this article are needed to promote that mindset, id say vision/the why and strong leadership are essential - and lack of these ingredients can really do damage to efforts to implement the change.

It is very important for leadership to align with processes agreed upon by scrum teams. Without leadership buy in structures struggle to stay in place or get disrupted often leading to frustrated developers. Change is a big part of being agile but it needs to be thought out before implementation.
