How do you actively listen to your audience?

Learning is a predefined goal. After that you need to decide on the second purpose or just stay with learning. Listening involves both ears and eyes(in a two way communication). You should be able understand the meaning of the words through the body language of the person speaking to you, sentences can hold different meanings with different body gestures.

Also, it is necessary to gauge your state: are you willing and able to fully engage with your interlocutor? Concomitant commitments, awaiting phone calls, being distracted or simply not being at your best will all hinder your listening capability.

Listening is a skill. It's the 80% of the art of communication. Without it, what you get is reaction but with it, you get response.

It can be equally as important for the speaker as it is for the listener. It sets the foundation and allows the speaker to be fully grounded and present - creating the momentum that allows for charismatic and meaningful connection and to overcome any of those early nerves. It can be as simple as having 2-3 lines prepared that make the intro and conclusion of a story - capturing attention and bringing extra meaning to the journey of the talk/ discussion.

Active listening begins with a sincere desire to learn from another individual, their experience, their opinions, their perspective etc. Check your intention, are you listening to learn or to respond? If you are listening to respond, you are not really listening. Are you? I understand we may have a situation where responding becomes crucial; however, this is an outlier. Our knowledge as an individual is finite, active listening allows us to learn. This skill is disappearing from our consciousness, our focus is scattered. Distractions are plentiful, we don’t listen anymore. Active listening is an acquired skill, it requires a lot of practice and conscious effort.

There's an interesting concept in co-active coaching which can extend to all conversations, which is the "three levels of listening" Level one is listening to yourself, level two is intensely focused on the other person, and level three is focused on the other person with a wider focus, picking up on body language and tone, and the context. When we "read a room" we are listening to level three.

Active listening is a crucial skill for any public speaker to engage and connect with their audience effectively. your body language says a lot about you. When you maintain Eye Contact, Look at your audience members directly and maintain eye contact. This shows that you're attentive and interested in what they have to say. The next important thing is to keep your body language open and receptive. Avoid crossing your arms or displaying closed-off gestures, as this can create a barrier between you and the audience. Remember that active listening is a skill that takes practice to master.

Indeed! Active listening involves paying attention to both the words someone says and their non-verbal cues, such as tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. This helps us to get a complete picture of the person's feelings and intentions.

Non-verbal cues are useful to convey that one is a) "fully" present and b) listening to understand and not to respond. The nature of non-verbal expressions ought to be tailored to the context and the folks on the other side. As a general principle, yes, I find it useful to make eye contact and nod in acknowledgment. I also try to be warm, put people at ease and not seem overly eager to say my piece. I usually take notes, except if it is a sensitive conversation. A couple of format notes - In virtual meetings, I prefer to turn my video on to convey that the others have my undivided attention. In in-person meetings, if offered a meal or drink, I usually choose the least messy/complex/ noisy option. :)

However, interpreting and responding to non-verbal cues can be more difficult in online conversations. While online communication enables us to interact across geographical areas and time zones, the potential for misinterpretation of non-verbal cues is more significant than in face-to-face meetings in the real world.?We may miss sarcasm, humour or other subtle cues that are easier to detect in person if we can only see, at best, facial expressions and hear the tone of voice.

Imagine that you are a manager & meeting with one of your employees to discuss their performance. You can actively listen by asking open-ended questions like 1.Can you share some of the achievements in this month of which u are most proud? 2. What difficulties did u run into while working on this project, & how did u resolve them? 3. What areas do u feel need more support to improve ur performance? 4. What steps can we as a team take to improve our teamwork & effectiveness? 5. How do u see ur job changing during the following 6 months? These open-ended inquiries enable the employee to give thorough answers & to be more candid about their ideas & objectives. U can gain deeper understanding of their opinions, experiences, & expectations.

I love open-ended questions from a clinical perspective and in business. It gives your patient or client a chance to voice out how they're feeling right at the moment and it gives you direct insight into what they need help with the most. I prefer slightly directed open-ended questions such as, "What’s the ONE thing you need help with right now?" "What’s the ONE thing you're worried about right now?" "What’s the ONE thing getting in your way of achieving [insert goal if you know it]?" This type of open ended question allows you to address their top concerns during short consultations. You'll also be able to provide them with a solution or action plan while they'll feel heard and cared for. Active listening is key in building rapport!

So useful, particularly in situations where multiple or multi-dimensional arguments are made (by an individual or multiple people). Again, I cannot emphasize enough the usefulness of maintaining sharp notes. Paraphrasing and summarizing is also useful in situations where parties disagree. It allows one to a) acknowledge the speaker that they've been hard before expressing one's opinion and b) (where relevant) reconcile related arguments to enable a consensus

Underrated, in my opinion. It can be really hard for people to express themselves honestly on certain issues. For example, colleagues may have to share critical feedback about folks they report to. There is obviously some fear of negative consequences or coming across as "weak". I find it useful not to rush into problem-solving or interrogation mode in these situations. I try to be patient and hear them out before sharing my perspective or next steps (if applicable). Two reasons - a) folks often simply want to be heard, and b) it gives you more information to work with. It is also useful to follow up and check in following such difficult conversations, even if it may not always be convenient.

As an attorney it is my job to understand and show empathy towards my clients. This skill is the most underrated and most useful. People will generally not be open and honest with you if you do not show that you understand their problem and can show some empathy toward them. Asking them about their needs and feelings goes a long way toward really understanding their problem and how they are affected by it, as well as helping them recover from the act or occurrence they needed to talk to me about. You do have to be careful though not to just suggests solutions you might think are right. you need to let them figure out what will work best for them but have plenty of ideas they could think about.

Distractions will occur regardless of your intent to listen fully and actively. Proper preparation for these conversations is key in order to build authenticity in that relational moment. Moreover, avoid those knee-jerk interjections... they can wait! Active listening stems primarily from care and a place of genuine empathy. Remember that active listening is not just waiting for your turn to speak: it starts with full attention because you actually care.

Everyone leads very busy lives now-a-days make sure you are at your best when meeting with others. Get plenty of rest, eat healthy and enjoy fun social interactions. As an active listener if you burn yourself out you will not be able to appreciate and empathize when others approach you to talk. Sometimes it is difficult to reschedule a meeting, but you can always take a break or two in between and catch your breath. Or you can ask for a few minutes. A couple years ago, I was running from one meeting to another. While driving someone bumped into me with their truck thankfully very minor damage. When I arrived, I explained what happened asked for 5 minutes to gather myself and the meeting went great.
