There is no substitute for just really knowing your thesis, the latest trends and forecasts in your space, and understanding how the market is evolving. Next, 1. Do not only read science books. To be able to think outside the box - and VCs *have to* - read and watch some SciFi too. :-) Some technological achievements that are nowadays totally normal in our daily lives habe been predicted by Sci-Fi. Think StarTrek's communicator and smartphone. ??

Venture capitalists have a big job. They need to know what's new and cool in the business world. First, they talk to smart people. These smart people work in startups and big companies. They know what's happening now and what might happen next. Next, they read a lot. They also look at reports. These reports tell them what customers like and what they might like soon. Then, they go to meetings and big events. Here, people show off new ideas and products. They also invest in learning. Learning more about technology and markets helps them make better choices. Lastly, they talk to each other. Venture capitalists share what they know. It's like putting together a big puzzle of the future. By doing all these things, they stay ahead.

Networking is key. VC is a private market. Little information is public. This requires VC managers to actively build relationships with others. In all directions, on all channels, all the time. But do not only network (=attend events, connect online and IRL with ppl, listen and speak podcasts etc) within the tech&VC echo chamber. We need to look beyond. Network in target industries. Tech is not an art for arts sake.

There is much that can be learned from reading the best analysts, from the smartest investors, and from the brightest founders. Curating a list to follow on a platform like X is a relatively easy way to stay abreast of trends, and figure out what is worth a deeper-dive.

Save yourself a lot of time by curating only the information relevant to your key focus sectors and geographies. You can still keep track of global news occasionally. The biggest advantage lies in you noticing how industry trends and news affect your portfolio companies and other similar companies. Stock traders do it a lot using several other indicators including investor sentiment. As a VC, most of the time you have to develop a strong conviction only with a few indicators and limited data. In the absence of sufficient industry data or information from external sources, both the founder and the VC are clueless about interpreting their company data.

I spent 7.5 years as the MD at Techstars and over my tenure got to evaluate 20k+ startup applications and interview thousands of founders. I was able to identify trends by seeing such high volume deal flow across industries, sectors and geographies. If you can see more top of the funnel, that's a great way to see themes and trends happening in real time on the ground.

By establishing your own viewpoint you become a magnet for those who share your perspective, and will come to you. Create the deal flow you seek by taking a stand on what you believe and want to see in the world. Entrepreneurs are out there, and they will find you if you, like them, have the courage to put your stake in the ground and then stand by it regardless of contrarian headwinds or naysayers.

Be aware of the fact that sometimes the major disruptor of a business comes from the most unexpected corners. Sharpen your peripheral vision. And think in problems, not in solutions. Successful solutions are only temporary until a better one comes around, the problem is lasting.
