It is important to recognize that setting goals is not the first step in the process. One needs to first understand the context - what is happening out there in the world. This context not only includes external factors. It also includes the assumptions and hypotheses of the strategic planner. That is why I often advise my clients and students that it is important to consider whether the situation demands a theory of change or a logic model before diving into setting goals.

Ensure success metrics align with the nonprofit's mission and values, with the board’s oversight maintaining this alignment. Engage the board in strategic discussions to reinforce the plan's importance and foster a shared commitment across all levels of the organization. This involvement enhances oversight and strategic alignment.

Instead of focusing on how to measure the 'success' of your strategic plan, think about what info you'll need to steer through your strategic plan. 'Success' should already be defined in your strategic plan - your goals should be articulated as success statements! What you need to measure throughout the lifetime of your plan are indicators that answer the question: are our activities moving us toward our strategic goals? Every strat plan we put together includes both of these elements: strategic goals that read as built-in success indicators, and a robust monitoring framework that tracks the signals your organization needs to stay on track.

The work we do is incredibly compassionate and impactful, and this should be reflected in the metrics we track. This means being open to exploring not only quantifiable and monetary-based metrics like financial performance, program impact, and productivity but also qualitative metrics: workplace culture (i.e., modernized workplaces with remote and flexible options, employee satisfaction, morale, and retention rates), DEI (representation across boards and staff and inclusivity in decision-making), and community engagement metrics (such as partnership development and community feedback). When we keep the community's voice and needs at the forefront and reflect them in our metrics, we're staying true to our existence and remaining innovative.
