Probably best to have different portfolios. One should show a series you’ve recently been working on of 20-25 pieces. Another portfolio could be how you came to the series you recently completed. I think we progress as an artist and one period links to another in some way. That is what defines creativity vs just applying paint or learning a technique.

It’s very important to document and photograph as much as you can when making art from beginning, middle to end. It’s important to save sketches and concepts, color palates … everything and keep them in a file for retrieval. Having these materials can be useful when exploring a project in depth when the occasion arises…you can tell a provocative visual story! But, if you are a professional artist with a large body of work, these items will only take up needed space in your arts portfolio.

If seeking roles at a company/corporation, show that you understood the business challenge, strategy, target customer/audience, etc. Incorporate any key data points from market research or in house metrics. This will show that you are business oriented, which they want, and not just aesthetically oriented towards nice creative. That's great to have, and necessary, but art and content don't meet revenue goals unless they're aligned with the business strategy.

This may differ considerably when applying to say reputable BFA or MFA programs that will have different requirements based on your specific medium or practice of choice and chronology of works made in the past two to three years. Portfolios will also differ when artists apply for residencies or grant opportunities that will then have very specific portfolio requirements. Always have your title(s), medium/ materials, scale (L, W, H), date created, and special notes included in a separate word or pdf. document ready to include with the portfolio that corresponds to the image.

It’s not a bad idea to develop both an online version *and* a hard copy. A hard copy really breaks through in interviews and other in-person meetings Since we’re in such a digital world now. People get so many emails that an email with a link to your portfolio may not stand out. In hard copy portfolios, include a QR code to view any online media right then and there, or provide a memorable vanity URL to direct people to your website/online portfolio.

All of your finished work should be your best work … yes, you should update but no you should not remove your older work… you show growth and change and that is your process … however, you can have multiple portfolios that display different mediums or genres.

As artists grow their portfolio over time, do not discount the journey, breadth and depth that sometimes older works may contain. Even though they may be dated, they are still relevant to the overall body of work being created in an artist's career. There are great examples of celebrated artists cataloging their entire life's work through annual, semi annual, five and ten year portfolio spans. This can be uploaded to a personal website, or take advantage of social media sites that you can solely dedicate to cataloging your studio career. Most importantly, take many quality images, more than you think you need so that you can sort through and edit them as needed. Be thorough in your process of documenting 2d and 3d artwork.

That contribution is quite on point. I would add that updates presumes that some of the issues have been recorded or taken note of. What are expected or rather what I do with my updates are 'additions' of issues and developments that occurred after my last updates. At the end customers and followers have the advantages. And I also gain clarity and visibility.
