How can your body language make a great impression in job interviews?

I have interviewed people whose body language was in total disparity with their words. This has helped to determine whether the person would be a good fit for the organization or if I was being told what they felt I’d want to hear. During interviews, it is pertinent your body language is a true representation of not just your thoughts but also your words. Without realizing it, people often act out what they’re thinking rather than what they’re saying. This should be guarded against as the interviewer can easily detect this and though you check all the boxes during an interview, this can serve as a huge deterrent to you getting the job as it pushes the red flag of integrity.

Sitting with straight, proper posture will show that you are engaged, and interested. When something peaks your interest, you perk up. Be conscious of this while interviewing. Be mindful of using your hands and movement to communicate. Using small movements can demonstrate passion for what you're communicating to the interviewer. A lack of movement can show coldness, and stillness. Lastly, maintain as much eye contact as possible. Avoid looking to the top right of somebody's head, as this is often where people look when they're lying.

Eye contact is important, but you also want to express emotion through your eyes. I call this smizing, and it adds humanity to the interview. When you smile, your eyes naturally smile with your teeth, and it shows the interviewer you're genuinely feeling what they're saying. When you feel you've made enough eye contact, still maintain a gaze in their direction so you do not appear distracted or not present.

Practice sitting still at home, alone. Fidgeting, or too much body movement can imply you're uncomfortable or nervous which will make the interviewer think you are not suitable for the role. Speak slowly, and at a normal tone. Don't fidget with your hands, rather fold them in front of you if you are not using them to communicate. The best way to get comfortable with not fidgeting too much is to sit in stillness in lotus pose for ten minutes a day and then slowly increase the time as you get comfortable with ten minutes. Too much caffeine intake will also make you fidget so be mindful of how much caffeine you are taking.

Being authentic and natural in an interview is crucial . Here's how being authentic and natural can benefit you in an interview: Builds Trust: Authenticity builds trust. Before walking into the interview, do some breath work. A while back, I was a little late for an interview because I got rear-ended on the way in. To make up time, I sprinted (yes, sprinted) from the parking lot to the interview, which was about a 0.5 mile trek. By the time I got to the office, I started my breath work, which was about a 2 minute walk from the entrance to their office. By the time I arrived, my breath was slow and calm. This allowed me to be more authentic, and confident. Telling yourself positive mantras and why you are the best person for the role beforehand also helps a great amount. When you go in, tell them why you're the best fit. If you genuinely feel that you are the best for the role, this will translate.

Always be prepared for your interview, and I'm not talking about your skills and knowledge. Learn as much as possible about their corporate culture and act accordingly. Your body language needs to be aligned with their business practices. Mirrors it, smile, breath. In the end, this is just an interview and your peer-to-peer interaction needs to be welcoming. If you feel anxious, take some time to meditate few minutes before starting the conversation. Use your "talisman" if you feel more comfortable.

Do breath work before walking into the interview to slow your breath. Meditate and visualize yourself in the new role. Practice interviewing in the mirror. Approach every question from their perspective and WHY they should give you a chance, not why you want the role. Be guided by a business and logic-based mindset. Take all personal issues away from it. It's never personal.
