How can you write technical content that is suitable for website design?

Writing with a target audience in mind is a pretty great way to ensure your content remains on point. Think of your audience as your target. You’re the shooter, who hopes to hit the bullseye with your carefully crafted posts. To this effect, you need to consider tone and even removing entire sections from your first draft. For example, if I’m writing technical content for established professionals, I won’t bother explaining basic concepts—as my audience probably knows that already. Of course, if I wanted to write the same post for a less-knowledgeable audience, I will have to switch my approach.

The people you’re writing for expect something great from you. So dream up something great and work backwards. Reverse engineer that beautiful vision. But before you begin, consider who exactly you’re talking to. Who is expecting something great from you? What do they care about? How do they speak? What words are inside their word bank? Use those words.

Certainly know your audience is a consideration here. As this will govern the level of information, etc., that is presented in the web page. Additionally and potentially at least as important, is understanding the media that will be used to compose and present the material produced. As the presentation media may place constrains of the material being produced, for example. Due to the above constraints you may need to adapt/ tailor what and who your material is presented on the web page.

Before I start writing always make sure to keep the perspective of the audience in mind and what information they need to know from a particular topic. Focus on the key points do not keep on exaggerating things unnecessarily and provide point to point answers. These things help the reader to relate more to the content and find it relevant to get engaged.

Write in plain language. This is right, but sometimes adding some advanced English words in plain language sentences makes the content more attractive to readers as it helps their vocabulary, and everyone loves to read something new. Understand the level of your users and use words accordingly. Use short sentences, and while proofreading, start reading backwards; it will help you understand that your content is understandable or has some gaps that need to be filled.

I've always liked the guideline of not having too many layers (similar to online help structure) so that you don't have the user jump more than 3 levels down... but this is a guideline, not a hard rule. There are times and places when you're going to have a lot of subordination, so live with it. :) However, it's always a good idea to chunk your information so that one page addresses a single concept as much as possible. And never make your users scroll forever: if you've so much information that it won't fit reasonably on a screen or two, break it up into smaller pieces.

Code snippets are great for making your website welcoming and familiar-feeling for programmers. Less is more. Dark background is king. Even better is a light to dark mode toggle. Use a code snippet that anyone, even people who don’t know much about coding, could paste in to a program or an IDE to see something cool.

While a black background is common, consider alternatives if it clashes with the site's color. Format inline code differently; it won't confuse the reader. Don't forget, if you're sharing code, make it easy to copy. Finally, a technical writer may not know coding, but they're part of the development team. To keep your reputation intact, have a developer review the code.
