I've had the wonderful experience of being invited into 'dead' writer's rooms. Often frozen solid from multiple conflicting stakeholders and personal ambitions that results in having too much on one plate to make for a good story. It's always a wonderful journey to trim away the fat to uncover that initial creative spark and rebuild from the ground up, so you get a story streamlined to the underlying theme. Another part is structure. Junior writers will often see it as a limitation to their creativity, but challenging them to rearrange the script to strictly adhere to a known structure as a guideline, is a good way to test the waters on how to improve the script, or why making it a conscious choice not to is a better direction.

One thing I've learned is to be mindful of the medium. There is a vast difference between writing for 2D and 3D animation (kids/family). Otherwise awesome writers with a strong 2D background won't necessarily transition that well into 3D. Scripts will often be heavy on dialogue, and the wordy jokes that work in 2D will fall flat in 3D space. The other way around has its problems too, as 3D writers will easily get too ambitious and hope for effects that is out of scope for most 2D productions. A classic Tom & Jerry is very different from Phineas & Ferb, which again varies wildly from a 3D LEGO cartoon. Knowing and understanding each medium's weaknesses and writing to their strengths is the best way to ensure success.

All of my best work were done by others. I might have handed in a script, I might have whipped up a storyboard, but in the end it's someone else's job to make it come alive. Usually that person is just as creative, fun and professional of yourself, they just come with a perspective from a different craft. The solutions they propose might not be right, but the problems they point out will persist, if you don't come up with something better/easier/cheaper. I've had great productions that ended up far from the approved script and others that were right on point. The best results comes from leaving your ego by the door and concentrate on what will give the audience the best experience.
