How can you write engaging content for international audiences?

It is also advisable to learn about the culture and demography of the audience for two reasons. 1. To use illustrations and examples they can connect and easily relate with and draw them a step closer to you and your ideas or presentations. 2. To ensure you do not say or pass across any insensitive comment or jokes. Everyone listens to authority, are curious about facts and love an exciting story- a perfect blend of these three elements make you stand out as a speaker.

For example, I recently worked a B2B contract, which targeted both the UK and Australia (socially & and via published pieces, etc) I found that engagement vastly improved when adjusting the TOV to be more attractive to the AUS audience. Use of colloquialisms that grab the attention of your target market quicker than your other tones would really help increase the effectiveness of the content! ?? - Research your audience, and adapt your messaging to suit!

Study your target audience and gain useful data that will help you write in the way that will be easily received. Never embark on a work without getting to know your audience those are the most important part of the whole task of they don't get it then your message is meaningless.

Along with slang and colloquialisms, be aware of cultural references. Don't assume everyone is familiar with the same sports, movies, public figures, etc. I remember a colleague getting blank stares when they used a soccer/football ? analogy for an audience in the Phillipines - the audience was more familiar with basketball and baseball ?? ?

While writing my non-fiction books or reviewing content and also when I share "Strengthen Self-improvement" newsletter on LinkedIn, I consider these factors: 1. If the language is awkward, readers may leave my content. I therefore use simple language for all ages. 2. I speak simply, energetically, and briefly. Unclear terminology doesn't benefit readers. I'll bracket the definition of unfamiliar words so readers don't require dictionaries. 3. I describe acronyms and technical terms as if I don't know them. This motivates readers to complete the reading. 4. I use examples to assist readers understand and remember. I advise applying these tips to create clear and concise writing for a global audience, regardless of the style.

Simple, clear writing is more impactful than complicated jargon. Regardless of native language, a short sentence with the main points emphasized will help any type of reader get the message.

It is important to know your audience so as use language and content that is understood by most. In the period I lived and worked in a foreign country with other colleagues from non-English speaking countries, I learned how to use words in their literal sense. Idioms, some phrasal verbs and colloquial words were confusing to some. For example, phrases like; 'put up with' or 'put down' mean tolerate or write/pay a deposit/discourage/mercy kill a sick animal respectively. These, and other phrases that are so commonly used in the English language can 'put off' some people in their quest to 'keep up with' your content. In order to communicate, especially in English, to an international audience; simple and literal is the way to go.

Humans, independently of culture, have always connected and communicated through stories. So use storytelling and metaphors that everyone can relate to simply by virtue of being human. If your subject matter is very technical, put it in context. Don’t just relay facts, definitions, or jargon. Make it about something explicitly meaningful. Remind your audience of why it matters and how it relates to them. Connect the dots for them so that they can relate to you and to what you are saying. Culture is a much more flexible concept than we often realize. But, the human need for meaningful connection extends far beyond culture; and, storytelling can be a powerful way to connect to people from all over the world.

Like I said in one of my previous contributions, think like a fashion designer when you want to know your audience. That will help you make a clothes (writings) that fit.

I feel that stories are a universal language. They transcend borders and cultures, allowing you to connect with people from diverse backgrounds on a deep level. Share relatable narratives and create a sense of unity and understanding among your international readers. Stories evoke emotions, making your content memorable and impactful. Emotions are a universal human experience, and storytelling allows you to tap into these shared feelings, leaving a lasting impression on your international readers. International audiences are more likely to share and discuss content that resonates with them emotionally, leading to increased engagement and broader reach.

With the rise of social media, there are a bunch of creators that have emerged from everywhere. Research and learn their style and what is working for them. Identify gaps in the way of communication and aim to improve it while curation your content. Knowledge trumps everything but some background research will help you strike a chord with your target group.

Remember to look at the features and characteristics of different platforms to adapt your tone and style to your audience. The tone of a blog post can't be the same as that of a Facebook post, a LinkedIn post, or a report.

Don't jump into writing for an unfamiliar audience without taking time to study the cultural context. It's more than using accurate grammar and following style guides, it's about respect and sensitivity.

If you're unsure of cultural context (as it can easily backfire), consider using global events or shared experiences, like the Olympics or worldwide movie releases, as anchors for your content. The outer layer should be universally appealing, while as you delve deeper, it becomes more region-specific.

Well, my first question here is "why would you want to write to an unfamiliar audience?" unless you're writing for them. That will mean you have some sort of familiarity and experience with them. So, use that as a pedestal or stair to climb up the ladder of knowledge. Like I explained in one of my previous contributions, you don't need to know everything or "too much" about them...you just need to know what you need. Too much pressure to know more than you can can make your research into their contextual life unproductive.

One thing I've discovered useful is researching the target audience's culture, trends in language business, and lifestyle so that the content provided appeals to the target demographic. Because culture differs, it is important to remember that what works for one audience may not work for another.

A few colleagues in a former employer's security department set up a live cyber-safety demonstration. They went to a lot of trouble to set up something that could be viewed on-site and globally. Unfortunately, they referred often to "MI5", the "Metropolitan Police", and their phishing email came from a supermarket called Tesco. If you're UK familiar, you might get all these references, but this really dulled the impact of all their hard work for the global audience. If you are preparing something like this, check it with someone who is not from your country. It's a shame to tell someone how to protect their computer, but then veil the main messages with unfamiliarity.

When communicating with international audiences, remember this. Audiences don't exist in a vacuum. They exist on channels. Keep your writing in the style of the channel, and you will not slip.

Familiarise yourself with the socio-cultural ethos of the audience you're writing for. If needed, with their business scenario too. And with their language usage patterns. If your audience is global, you need an overall global understanding of these aspects. Also, cite scenarios, examples and anecdotes that your audience will relate well to. For a global audience, pick these from across the world. But for readers of a particular region or ethnicity, you could pick these from their context. Doing it this way will help your readers understand and relate to your content better and show them that you respect their way of life.

I have found that people resonate with stories; personal or reported. Use stories and real life examples to illustrate your points. Stories make people both understand your point better and connect at a deeper level. And who doesn’t love a good story?

Find a common ground. Identify topics that most persons relate to. Use simple, clear, familiar stories to reach the hearts of the readers of that amazing Writing piece you have.

Consider carefully before targeting an international audience. What exactly is your goal? Are you sure you have explored every single aspect of your current, national market?

Writing for an international audience is chance for you to share your original ways of thinking and writing with humans who are not used to them.So allow them to experience that. And get some value from that diversity.Do not try to conform to any norms.Be real and respectful.

At the end of the day we are all humans and have similar types of emotions. When you read a self help guide, you still feel some of it applies to you. Right? But, one thing to understand is the culture difference. Because of that, content has to vary. Second is the spelling and vocab that you need to build. Your message will still be the same, the way you convey might change. Your first focus should be understanding the cultural context of the industry. How is it performing? What motivates people to buy the specific thing? How is it different? Then build the vocab for the same. Thirdly, research on the previous works of other companies. Now, when you sit to write, you will be in a much better space. Engaging content is all strategy.
