How can you work effectively with artists and producers to achieve their vision?

It’s important to get a sense of what the client likes. Getting a sense of their tastes and overall sound aesthetic can help you deliver results that resonate.

In my experience I’ve had more success in getting both visions across by first understanding who the artist is how they feel & think in general. You have to get personal with them. Me as the producer, it’s my job to pull the best performance out of the artist and guide them into having a great record. In order to do that you can’t just force an artist to do a record they feel no connection too granted, there will be times where there’s a record that makes sense and has all the right elements around it and both artist & producer need to trust each other in that instance . Ultimately both producer and artist are taking a chance on each other but that’s what music is about, taking chances on something that feels risky but it feels so right!

In my experience, if you aren't either the artist or the producer, but are part of the team, try to provide the missing skills of the team. Anything from tuning to explaining why parallel 4ths aren't a great idea. Depending on the ego load of everyone, be prepared for either no recognition all the way up to being mentioned as a part of the team in the liner notes. This is why you must strive to be involved AS the producer or artist. These might be smaller projects, but when it is your name on it, it will feel better instantly.

Communication is key. If you don’t know what the artist and the producer’s end goal is, there’s no way you can achieve it. In my experience, when working with an artist with a specific goal you need to listen, be flexible and supportive. In the end, it’s all about the artists vision, and how you get that vision across. Sometimes attitude is everything.

Knowing your role is key here. To that point, I know I have a reputation of sticking to my role, so much so that clients have sought me out because of this adherence to the idea. What does this mean exactly? There are projects where they only want a great engineer. In those sessions I am there only to be sure the recordings are absolutely the best they can be. They don't need my opinion on performances or lunch, its just gotta sound amazing. Conversely, when I am producing and someone else is engineering I am more than happy to let the engineer do his/her thing. To that point, I nearly have to drag an opinion out of said engineer if I do want their opinion. That's what it means to be professional, after all. Know your place.

Active Listening: By actively listening, understand their ideas, inspirations, and aspirations for the project. Paying attention not just to what is said but also to the emotions and energy behind their words. Ask Thoughtful Questions: Encourage open dialogue by asking thoughtful questions about their vision, preferred sound, and artistic goals. This helps you gain deeper insights into what they want to achieve.

Effective communication has been a major factor for me since day one. I also emphasize being a good collaborator. Everyone has a different process that needs to be respected, and through my experience, I've come to understand that embracing these different approaches is what ultimately leads to the creation of the best music, meaningful relationships, and the enhancement of creativity.

For me, it's all about communication. But the role of the producer needs to be defined and not assumed. At the end of the day it's the producers job to extract or capture the ARTISTS vision. Ego can play too big a role these days when it comes to producing. Many so-called producers attempt to impart their personal tastes or opinions upon the artist, ignoring what the artists vision actually is. As a songwriter myself, when I first started recording and producing I fell into this trap too, not actually listening to the artist or band I was attempting to work with. I had some unhappy clients early on because I didn't understand my role as the producer. I eventually understood what my role was supposed to be and adjusted accordingly.

I have come to understand that once you’re a service provider you automatically have brand to grow and over the years I have come to realize that good communication helps your brand as a audio technician, nevertheless knowing how to use your tool is important but when you add great communication skill it bestows the professional medal on the technician. A technician with great communication skill would have less back and forth mixes because the technician must have gotten necessary information from the artist or producer like it was stated in the article ‘before you start working on the project there are necessary questions you need to ask just to know the expectation of the artist or Producer’, pointing you to the right direction.

Be prepared to discuss numbers, even if they seem extreme to you, at first. Be prepared for large honest numbers to scare away a client. Be prepared to pass on a job when the client just wants a service at the lowest cost, unless you want to be a service provider delivering at the lowest cost.

Customers are paying for expertise and experience. The value that is added for services depends on the insight that the vendor is capable of providing. If the client is metrically oriented, though I discourage this, create an hourly rate based on your level of expertise. Be specific from the beginning about what is being delivered. Have them respond to any business proposal with clear language. If you are uncertain, ask for clarification and provide options in easy to understand language. Once settled on what kind of deliverable is needed, provide 2-3 possible outcomes with different cost structures. Each outcome will be billed based of quality, with the more expensive one having results surpassing expected outcomes.

Fair negotiation will be the greatest tool for professional-to-client satisfaction rates. Most professionals are reluctant to discuss their rates upfront. This is a huge mistake and could cost you a possible long-term client. Be fair with your prices to both you and your client. Know your worth but be willing to put the work in to gain the notoriety to charge higher rates. Discussing your rates in advance will answer critical questions for you, as the professional, that may prove to be threatening. Such as the number of songs, the length of songs, and the budget your client is working with to be able to consider if their goals are attainable before you even begin. Allowing your client to decide the amount of effort intended for the job.

Know your worth and do not be afraid to negotiate what you think is right for what has been asked of you. Some will not work with you (yet), but if your worth is consistently producing results they will eventually come back. Be prepared to partially invest in opportunities that cannot reach your budget by suggesting alternate ways of payment. George Lucas waved his 500K salary for Star Wars merchandise rights and ownership sequel work. Ask for publishing % or other forms of assets as payment.

Deadlines. Especially in music projects. Any kind of deadline is necessary. Even if that is just "The money has run out". Otherwise, you can chase your tail hunting for "Quality".

Timeline and deadlines are always critical, and a representation of your work as a professional. I find that transparency is a key component to getting over challenges, and receiving guidance through feedback that will assist in navigating along the way.

Regardless of the level of degree your client has agreed to commit to paying, a professional should always approach that level with his/her best ability. This does not mean you must go beyond what is required of you (unless you so choose to do so) but rather complete the duties to the absolute best of your ability. Maintain a level of ethical conduct in everything you complete and the notoriety you seek will surely arrive sooner.

Either do the best you can or don't take on the assignment. Quality is king. Half@ass work will follow you for ages before you can shake it off (if you ever do).

- Always deliver something you believe in, and that you put energy into doing. - Respect deadlines, I always try to deliver the final version before the deadline. - Over-deliver whenever you can.

Any work is people-work. Shake hands, smile, and remember details and preferences. Be genuine about it though because nobody likes a fake personality. Be yourself and your circle will become people who like you for who you are. Also, be open to different people and life approaches. Acceptance of others and their ways will make them feel comfortable and will help them open up and stay true to you too.

Treat people with greater self-aware conduct than the work you perform, and become self-aware of the greater, people will conduct work for you to perform. Simply put, put the efforts into maintaining personable positive relations with those you work with and for, and you will prosper in areas unimaginable.

For me it's about showing up on the job, execution and being a team player on all levels; aligning with expectations as your building relationships along your career.

Even the most talented and inspired creatives have a hard time getting things moving in session (especially mix sessions) if I simply ask them how they would like things to sound. Instead, I find if I simply start mixing, it’s cool, how immediate and specific their direction becomes, because now they have something they can now talk about in terms of what they do or don’t like or changes they would like or some ideas they have now, etc. I’m not offended in the slightest, even if there are lots of changes requested because It was simply a way to get the ball rolling/conversation started. Sort of like being the first one on the dance floor to get things moving.

Give producers and artists a sonic starting point for discussion as they try to figure out what they are wanting to do or try next. They won't always know where to begin. Create/mix something they can say no to or "oh, how about," Artists and producers work with those people who are able to provide a view and perspective and ideas they haven't considered before. Not that they will necessarily use them, but having a starting point often helps propel and slingshot ideas and conversation. Be a creative element in the process who isn't offended when an idea isn't used. Be that pool of ideas that producers just can't consider working without. Become valuable in the ways that support the reason the artist/producer hired you in the first place.

I believe it’s a must to get to know how the artist works and how they are as people instead of numbers. I believe that the personal touch can help enhance a session and help ensure a return visit from the artist.
