The mentioned codes do not provide best practices. They refer to minimum safe practices, not best practices. The phrase “neat and workmen like” in the NFPA 70 (NEC) actually refers to the ANSI/NECA 1-2000 Standard Practices for Good Workmanship in Electrical Contracting. If you’re an engineer then you really need to be partnered up with a master electrician who is well seasoned in the product and/or services of your client. I find that you need to ignore what electricians say at the interview table. Asking for their responses is a waste of time for non-electricians. They’ll sell you for expertise that they don’t have and without an electrician at your table you’ll believe it. Best practices literally means how the installers install

The good practice to design safe electrical wiring is to design it according to IEC 60364-4 all parts. This standards family contains mandatory practices for designing an electrical wiring system which does not represent risks of fire, burns, short circuit and electrical shock. These standards are also recognized as national standards in many countries.

One of the mandatory requirements there - inspection and verification shall be done only by certified person, which received appropriate training.

Documentation and labeling actually shall be done before step 2, as this is one of important topics during verification - it shall be inspected first, that actual wiring and labelling are done according to wiring diagram. What is also important to keep record of: testing protocol from step 2 as an evidence that installation was done right. Otherwise legal consequences can occur.
