How can you use your unique skills to find the perfect job?

This is a crucial area that needs to be taken care of by young professionals. To find the perfect job using your unique skills, follow these steps: 1. Discover your strengths and passions. 2. List your unique skills. 3. Explore careers that match your skills. 4. Network with professionals in your field. 5. Invest in skill development. 6. Customize your resume for each job. 7. Showcase your skills during interviews. 8. Seek and apply feedback for improvement. 9. Be patient in your job search. 10. Evaluate offers based on your skills and goals.

Not sure there is such a thing as unique skills… but unique YOU is a fascinating ?? ?? combo! Your talents or skills matter, but what matters a LOT more is how you use those. When I’m hiring, I pay little attention to traditional skills and tons of attention to emotional intelligence and attitude. I look for people who care, feel true passion for the mission, and who will grow. So maybe that combo can help you consider your next role: what do you care about? What’s a mission you’d invest your ?? in? What makes you excited to learn and grow? Maybe that intersection is different for each of us, so perhaps that’s the real “unique skill”?

Uniqueness isn't about skills but how you use them. When hiring, prioritize emotional intelligence and attitude over traditional skills. Find alignment with a company's values and mission. Then, consider your excitement for learning and growth as your unique skill. Start with values, not skills, and enjoy your work environment.

Start with your values, not your skills. Make sure the company you want to work with align with your values. They will walk the talk not just have fancy words on a mouse mat. Then work out whether you’re remotely interested in the product or service they offer. You might be curious about what they do which is a great place to start. Then interview the person interviewing you to find out how you will be managed/led. Finally, skills come last. It’s so much easier to use your skills and experience to their full extent when your values and attitude align. Enjoy. You’ll be at your best when you enjoy being with the people you work with in an environment that you love. It’s an 80/20 rule as always, there will be 20% you don’t like. Roll with it.

Most people try to be "professional" in their interviews and professional interactions. They paralyze the very qualities that will make them stand out. They act fearfully that like a tall poppy in a field of universal size, they will have their heads chopped off. Risk everything. Risk standing out from others. Risk voicing your opinions. Get noticed. Be seen. Being like everyone else doesn't make you unique. It makes you like everyone else. Until you start taking chances, you won't risk being great.

Very often it's not just unique skills, but a unique combination of different skills. It is possible that you are an exceptionally good developer and at the same time possessing empathy and self-awareness. Or maybe you are a leader with a cross-cultural competence. What is that unique combination of skills that you possess?

Unique skills, or a unique combination of skills, can provide you an advantage in an organization or when on a job search. You will be able to accomplish some activities more easily than your peers, and this may provide opportunities for new and exciting projects that can take advantage of your unique skills package and help propel your career growth.

Enumerating your skills is step one, but identifying HOW those skills translate into actions and understanding specific situations is ideal. Think about a woman (or man) that comes out of parental leave, the skills they have developed and can now use. I know very few people (except parents) that can figure things out in a new job (parenthood) with little to no sleep and just get up every day without knowing what that day will look like. That's a skill you can list on your resume and give an example of how adapting to new situations, working under pressure, and smiling on cue are now new skills you can use.

Picking up from my point in the previous question that 'people' are unique rather than 'skills', it's really important that people recognise their own uniqueness. In doing so they develop self awareness and are more empowered to make positive career decisions for themselves.

Unique skills are crucial for several reasons. They aid in identifying the ideal job by pinpointing one's strengths, preferences, and values. These skills enable individuals to stand out in a competitive job market, impress employers, and showcase their suitability for specific roles or organizations. Leveraging unique skills can enhance confidence, motivation, and job satisfaction, contributing to a more fulfilling career. Recognizing and honing these skills is a valuable component of personal and professional growth.

Empowering people to identify their skills is something I'm really passionate about. So much so that I created a coaching tool to do just that! I designed 'What's your strength' to help people translate what the do in their lives into their own unique set of skills and qualities. By taking the time to reflect on our own unique lived experiences, we can discover a wealth of skills. And it's often the 'everyday' experiences such as living with a health condition or being a parent/carer that are overlooked yet they are the basis for a whole range of skills and qualities, many of which are transferable into the workplace.

In addition to reflecting on what you do well, think about what activities and projects bring you joy (or when you find flow). What skills or strengths did you employ in those situations? It can be helpful to describe these to a friend or mentor and ask them to listen for your unique skills and help draw those out.

Is there a perfect job? The most successful hires are unique humans beings who are most appropriate for the open position AND for the career path that this position offers. That’s not always a more glamorous title but a mutually positive fit with the vision, mission, core values and the team and knowledge network. If they don’t know them, you either failed to advertise them, or they are not really interested to work within your organization. Have them make up a story how they will flourish and advance in the new environment. This will open doors worth exploring. No story, no fit. Sorry, but let me help you find something else.

Some helpful questions of others or yourself to help reflect on this to get the juices flowing: "When have you seen me do something that seemed to come easy for me where others might have struggled?" "When you you seen me play a role on a project that made a difference in that project's success?" "If you could strip away everything else I do and just have me focus on ONE thing, what would it be?

Reflect on 2 -3 significant achievements from each of your past work experiences. Formulate each of these accomplishments using the STAR structure, which stands for Situation (S), Task (T), Actions (A), and Results (R). Once you've finished this exercise, could you take some time to review your achievements and identify any recurring patterns? For instance, you might notice consistent themes, such as always seeking inspiration from other industries to address challenges on your own or consistently integrating user perspectives into your decision-making process. After identifying these patterns, create a list of these recurring themes and translate them into a set of skills or competencies.

When you are skilled at something, you can make it your goal to be a subject matter expert on the topic. In addition to the suggestions listed, leveraging LinkedIn to network and share information related to your skills can illustrate your proficiency.

Volunteering is a great way to develop your unique skills. Here are a few ways to volunteer within and outside of the workplace: At work: - Join a committee - Offer to work on a special project - Fill in for a colleague that is away on vacation or personal leave You shouldn’t expect an immediate raise or promotion when you are volunteering for work outside of your normal scope. However, you can expect to build your skills and gain exposure to other departments and leaders within the organization. Outside of work: - Join a professional association and volunteer to work on a committee. - Sign up to volunteer for a non-profit in your community. - Join a civic service group such as Rotary, Kiwanis or Junior League.

Over the last few years I’ve learnt the value of self-awareness; although I learnt it through therapy it has become something applicable to the every day life, professional invites and can help us thrive by putting more focus on areas that set us apart. Although technical expertise are great, soft skills tend to come in handy in an ever evolving world; relational intelligence help us to understand mind the generational differences and engage accordingly at different levels.

What is the best part of the skills? You can choose any of the skills and develop it further. You can learn new and expand your unique skillset during your life and career. Depending on the competence, there are multiple ways to boost your expertise e.g. utilize the skill in a new context or teach it to someone else.

From personal experience, I believe that most people need to cultivate their intuitive nature in contrast to their skills. For those who are intuitive, the reverse is true. But for those of us who are used to working in structured environments, finding places where your intuitive nature is awakened will help you express yourself more fully and connect with others as people. Too often, people think that if they give "the right answer" that is enough to be hired. Being willing to risk being yourself and trusting that the right organization will choose you is the way to show your unique skills . . . which is all of you.

Tailored Resume: Customize your CV for each application. Highlight relevant skills that make you an exceptional fit for the role. Portfolio: For visual or project-based skills, maintain an updated portfolio. Websites like Behance or LinkedIn can host your work. Social Media: Utilize platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram. Share insights, projects, or achievements related to your skills. Recommendations: Gather testimonials or endorsements from colleagues, mentors, or clients. Authentic feedback can validate your skills.

In addition to listing your skills as they relate to the job, and demonstrating relevant accomplishments on your resume and in your interview stories, think about your unique value proposition. One of the things that makes you unique is your own journey - the common thread throughout all of the roles you have had, or why you chose to go in a certain direction, something you've learned about yourself, etc. Your journey is unique, those career themes are unique, and talking about them as they fit the new job helps demonstrate your fit and the value you can bring to the new role.

This always sounds so much easier said than done, right? I’m a big fan of visual examples. Can you link to an online portfolio with your samples of work? Can you include one as an addendum? Can you assess some current market opportunities and somehow showcase potential solutions you have for them, or better yet, the employer specifically, in a cover letter? How can you utilize this into an active social media campaign for you as the brand to draw attention or connections in? Can you get “safe creative” to market these items in a compelling way in your items without wasting time in ways that might not be value added (pretty doesn’t always equal better with job search materials…content and results still matter most)? Testimonials?

Finding the perfect job is a dynamic process that requires self-awareness, proactive networking, and a strategic approach to job searching. Your unique skills and attributes can be a valuable asset in this journey, helping you stand out and secure a role that aligns with your goals and values.

Seasoned candidates who want to work another 5 - 10 years before retiring deliver a unique dynamic that can be emphasized. Highlight the deep subject matter expertise that comes with extensive years of experience; the ability to mentor and transfer knowledge to the emerging leaders in the organization; while bringing stability to the function with the intention of landing with one final employer until moving into retirement in ~x years. Addressing this head on with all the reasons how and why you offer unique value will help you stand out.

Don't forget your "non-unique" skills too! If you're looking to possibly change direction, or move up in your current path, skills like managing, presenting, marketing, business development, coaching, planning, etc. are invaluable. If you're looking for a new industry you can emphasize these skills and use your unique skills as ways of demonstrating your competence. If you're looking to move up in your path, the non-unique skills are essential if you want to rise into levels of management .

It could be the very thing you don’t like about yourself. The thing you keep running away from. Sometimes we have our mind made up about how we want to show up in the world but we are called to something else. We may want to be bold, aggressive place maker. The thing we might be running away from is our thoughtful, examination of people and processes that cause us to ask pointed questions, wait and see the larger picture with all its implications.

Don't shy away from AI! I've enjoyed playing with AI to help align and explore job opportunities. Asking general, prompting questions such as "what jobs/industries use X, Y, Z skills predominately in their work?" is a great way to read and reflect on roles and industries you may not have considered before.
