I am expected to present a variety of materials--teaching, research, community, etc.--to a host of different audiences. Whether I'm speaking to a room of PhDs or a gym of k-12 students or a radio/TV audience, I remember that I'm only as good as next time, every work is a work in progress--even me--and every question is an opportunity. It helps to have a ready store of anecdotes, analogies, etc. but everything proceeds from those three axioms.

You don't really have to showcase your strengths, achievements, or skills, but those of the attendees. Everyone forgets that. Most motivational speakers' effects wear off as soon as they close the door behind them on their way out. A great speaker talks about their clients' achievements, their clients' accomplishments, and their client's added skills from attending the event

I don’t think a portfolio achieves much if not many people see it (unless they are the “right” people. I’ve had success in recent years by working with a well known podcaster where I got thousands of views instead of dozens. These can be amplified though Sites like YouTube, Facebook & Twitter. I also try to promote my ideas in short op eds that I later expand into more detailed research papers. One thing I’ve learned is that whether you are working as a casual lecturer, an author of short pieces, or a podcaster is the following: if you are dependable, show up, & have something to say that people want to hear, you will become increasingly successful
