How can you use your soft skills to build cross-functional teams in a new industry?

Soft skills are life skills and are critical for the success of any team. It is vital that we should do SWOT analysis and improve our performance as a team. Soft skills help teams to improve the quality of work and provide better results. When we are working together on a new project we must assess and evaluate team members strengths and challenges. This way team members’ strengths can be identified and taken to best use according to the emerging trends. Effective communication, positive thinking, positive attitude, negotiation, understanding, conflict resolution, public speaking, emotional intelligence , showing respect and cooperation, learning and sharing knowledge, leadership skills are all vital qualities for team success.

One way I've applied this when helping one of our clients to optimize its supply chain. I assembled a cross-functional team of supply chain experts, data analysts, and process improvement specialists. We collaborated to assess processes, implement lean methodologies, and leverage technology solutions. The result was a well-optimized supply chain that not only reduced costs but also enhanced the client's ability to respond to market demands promptly.

In my experience it also helps to know what the routine is and the standard and/or current workflow. Without structure it is very difficult to work together. We all learn with repetition and becomes second nature and this is crucial in every aspect of life, not just at work.

Based on my experience, another way to improve rapport in teams is to define and communicate clear roles and expectations. In a previous experience, I worked on a team which lacked clear boundaries and definitions between roles. This created an environment where multiple individuals felt overlooked in their contributions, and began overstepping into the role of others which they were not qualified or trained to do. By re-articulating the specific duties and value of each role, and increasing encouragement, team members began to feel appreciated for their work. This process also allowed our team to learn to support each other in meaningful and appropriate ways which contributes to our ability to reach and surpass goals.

I agree and would add you need to understand that every team member or even every person is different and has different approach to work. We need to understand what motivates our team members, what makes them satisfied at work, what tasks are easy and what tasks are hard. Every person has different set of skills and by getting to know your team first you can have more success as a team. All soft skills are crucial and can only help but communication, understanding others needs, cooperation and listening are crucial for the new role.

Initially, for a period of approximately 10 to 15 days, we encourage the candidate to plan their daily activities. Brief meetings are conducted to discuss their daily objectives, enabling us to assess their progress and provide guidance as needed. At the end of each day, a brief feedback session is conducted, with a strong focus on identifying challenges encountered, achievements, completed tasks, and pending tasks, along with reasons for any delays. This process aids in effective planning for the following day. Once the candidate aligns with our operational processes, the frequency of these daily plans and feedback sessions may be adjusted to bi-weekly or weekly sessions, depending on individual requirements and progress."

Don't pretend to know things when you don't. This should be common sense, but is often neglected in a fast-paced, competitive environment. If you foster this strategy within a diverse new team, you will achieve 3 breakthroughs at once: 1) it will be easier to have the real experts on a certain topic being heard when non-experts are just listening 2) you will avoid mistakes that usually happen when a vocal team member suggests something only to break the silence 3) you will create an atmosphere of learning - if someone always provides an allegedly plausible explanation for everything, you don't need to dive deep; however, people will go after the answer if the question remains without a token answer. Avoid token answers at all cost!

People tend to focus solely on their triumphs, failing to recognize that it is OK to embrace failure and learn from it. Sometimes not knowing something is absolutely OK, but it shouldn't stop you from trying nonetheless.

Perhaps the most important and overlooked soft skill that turns "failures" into "opportunities for growth" is self-forgiveness. Whether you judge yourself negatively or witness another person struggling to judge themselves, practicing and encouraging self-forgiveness becomes essential. Identifying the judgment is the first step. i.e., "I am not worthy of success." The second step is to forgive yourself for the judgment, "I forgive myself for judging myself for not being worthy of success." The third step is to reframe and share the truth. "The truth is that I'm learning and growing from this experience." And yes, celebrating victories along the way is also essential and fun.

Be ready to say ??i was wrong?? be ready to learn from your team and tell them what you learned from them. Always share knowledge and always know every person needs a different approach and make sure you change your leadership style depending on a task, situation and person.
