As with any type of work, know what you want to achieve and who you want to reach is a crucial first step. Without narrowing down your objective and target audience, it becomes rather difficult to plan a successful presentation. What does your audience like? What type of language is best used with them? How to engage this type of audience? Answering these questions before planning your presentation will set you up for more success.

From the onset, it is useful to identify the purpose of your social justice and change presentation. For example, are you intending to educate or share information with your audience. Once you have determined the above then you can tailor a presentation that is relevant to your intended audience.

For example, in the mental health space, the WHO website would be a great reference point to source reliable and reputable data, facts and evidence to support your arguments and claims. In addition, you can also leverage information from other professionals within your industry.

Most social justice and change causes evoke painful emotions which people usually shy away from. Therefore, it is important to maintain an overarching message which educates and advocates for hope and allyship.

My favourite way to improve is to always ask for feedback. Next to practicing (in front of a mirror, recording or with friends), you can also send a short survey to the participants afterwards and gather their feedback.

Try to engage your audience! Ask them questions, include a Kahoot, or get them moving. Make it enjoyable to attend your presentation!
