Networking is something I am currently working on as someone seeking an international role. I join groups and talk to people who work in international education. On my profile, I share stories about my journey as a teacher and the things I've achieved. Besides LinkedIn, I follow and engage with influential teachers, schools, organizations, and recruiters on social media and blogs. I'm really hopeful that soon I'll find the perfect job teaching abroad.

As an international teacher seeking to relocate, if you are looking at the UK - organise a teaching introduction video. Ideally have a short lesson of you teaching in action as you need to address any barriers to employment in the UK as you cannot physically interview in person.

Serendipity! When I finished my teaching credential a teaching recruiter called me for a job in Ohio. I didn’t want the job offered so I said to him I had my heart set on moving to Australia and if he knew anyone there who could help expedite my relocation, I would appreciate the referral. Long pause. It turned out he had an old girlfriend who had moved to Perth, Western Australia. I lived with her, utilized her immigration agent, and got my residency— taught there nearly five years. You never know what life will deliver when you claim your heart’s desire.

In my personal experience, firstly make sure you have accreditation in the prospective country. Whilst you may be highly qualified in your current country it doesn’t always equate. Contact the educational authorities and follow their guidances. Secondly, learn the language and culture of the country that appeals to you. In some countries your visa will require you learn the language and most learning institutions require at least B1 level of their native language. Lastly, build an online network in the country you want to work. Please be aware of cultural differences when networking! LinkedIn is very popular in most countries; build your profile to showcase your achievements in your area of expertise.

I like an existing contributors point re serendipity this term formed a key part of my Phd thesis! But do not go overseas without having someone you can flee to talk to contact and if need be stay with if your arranged accommodation proves lonely or too isolating. This would also apply to any teaching job you may obtain too! Make sure you know how to get to where the back up people your key friend has also nominated are if they themselves are away or not available on temporary basis!!
