How can you use your mentors and advisors to expand your network?

Just ask people. LinkedIn is a great tool to connect with people strategically and with laser-like focus. When I first started out I was trying to mass network. But really, the smarter thing to do is to write down what you need right now, and workout the people who you need to drive that vision forward. Then start reaching out to people on LinkedIn, finding events they will be at etc. Then craft a short genuine message. You don’t have to go straight in for the kill on what you want, but you also don’t want to just “pick someone’s brains” or invite them to a coffee because that would come across like a waste of time. Give them a hint of what you’re up to & optimise your profile to showcase what great things you’re doing!

To expand your network using mentors and advisors, first build a strong, trustful relationship with them. Then, politely ask for introductions to key contacts in their circles. Make the most of any events or gatherings they attend. Always be professional and grateful for their help.

Maintain a personal "Advisory Board" of sorts. This probably goes without saying, but keep it informal... (no need to tell people they're on your Personal Advisory Board). That said, develop a well-rounded group of people that can provide you with advice in different areas of your business. The first priority should be folks that can help you with Talent/Recruiting. You'll need help, and anyone who can accelerate this or help you find better candidates is invaluable. IMO, the next priority should be someone who understands GTM & "Product-Market-Fit". Continue to fill up your chessboard with experience in key areas that are crucial to your business, and folks who can help you make better decisions.

Think about the right people and not only what they can bring to the startup but what they can get out of it. Give, Give, Ask. You need to have clear instructions on what you need from them and why them, many startups have poster mentors or advisors that have no time to engage, make best use of their and your time and set expectations in terms of hours and time commitment

At the first step , should identify goals, in order when going to approach my mentors and advisors they know in advance what I'm going to do , this might help to provide much more alternative. Should bear in mind , keeping in touch with them would be on regular basis not when I need them. In this way they recognize my progress step by step. Ask them assist you in due time , not any time, hence effectiveness is important. Be provider at the end and distribute all their leads .

Demonstrate value by appreciating their insights. Implementing their feedback not only enhances your offering but also validates assumptions, boosting credibility. Share success stories stemming from their advice; it showcases progress and attracts stakeholders impressed by your adaptive approach. Remember, the relationship is symbiotic – their guidance benefits your startup, and your growth reflects positively on their mentorship.

Continuously seek feedback on your networking approach. They can provide guidance on refining your networking skills and making lasting connections.

I don’t use mentors and I don’t use advisors. I serve as a mentor and an advisor, and I dislike and distrust the various definitions of those two words because most of them being used are meaningless or mis-directions.

We are living in a century that being up to date and using accurate data is needed to progress and develop your knowledge. Social media with coverage of information and database in different fields ( depends on activity which looking for ) , has significant role to be in touch with networks. But don't forget if involve into them being active and share the information would be mandatory in a specific plan and time.

Highlight achievements, milestones, and challenges to maintain interest. Use their updates as opportunities to align your vision and seek their endorsement within their networks. Encourage them to share your progress, amplifying your reach. This continuous dialogue not only nurtures mentor connections but also turns them into active advocates, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

Nonsense. Why? The note that popped up after I wrote the above, said, “say more to give more information to others.” Sounds like a suggestion to share your strategy, “by the pound.” Not a good idea.

Gain insights, resources, and skills crucial for growth. Maximize networking opportunities with fellow founders and industry experts. Express gratitude publicly for mentor contributions, solidifying the relationship. Leverage events to showcase your startup's progress, attracting attention. Be an active participant, contributing to discussions and making your presence felt. This multifaceted approach turns events into a powerful growth tool, expanding both knowledge and network.

Attend events or circles where your mentors and advisors are present. Their presence can offer a bridge to meeting new people and entering new circles.

Demonstrate gratitude through generosity and reciprocity. Elevate your reputation by showcasing expertise, offering feedback, referrals, or testimonials. Actively contribute to their goals, projects, or challenges. Establish yourself as a valuable asset, making a positive impression. This symbiotic relationship not only strengthens bonds but also positions your startup as a proactive and collaborative player, paving the way for more opportunities and growth.

From my point of view , when we talk about value , it should be mutually beneficial. Mentors and I should added value to each other. It's same as game. Mentors need to have followers and I need someone to be my advisor, hence sharing values from both side is very important.

It is one of the most effective ways to influence your mentors is by showing them the other side of the coin where you can be also helpful to them.. try to understand their needs and focus on what you have to offer to them...this way they will remember your values ... and ready to put you in contacts with other people in their networks who might benefit from your assistance.

As a business owner, I've discovered that the mentor-advisor relationship is most fruitful when it's a reciprocal exchange. See it as a 2-way street. Beyond seeking advice, offering value to your mentors. Consider sharing industry insights, articles, or connections that align with their interests. By being proactive in providing valuable information, you not only demonstrate your commitment to the relationship but also position yourself as a valuable resource. This reciprocity not only strengthens your bond with mentors but also opens doors to their network, creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem of support and growth.

Depends on filed of activities, should consider factors and the way of communication. It won't be same for all the networks and people who we are in touch. Classification in the process and making impacts is sensitive and needs special attention.

I still get surprised when a startup tells me they did not think or know they could ask a mentor for an introduction or connection. When a mentor gets into mentorship support for a startup, they know and expect to invest their various resources to help the startup succeed. One of those resources is their network. So, as a founder, do not hesitate to ask your mentor to introduce you to companies and stakeholders you have on your target list and who can support your startup. As a founder, maintain a mentality that asking never harms! Hope this helps!
