It's about refining your storytelling technique to capture the attention of the interviewer (think of them as an audience) rather than rcruiters. Your resume is only the introduction to the story, your interview is the expansion of your brand or theme of the story

Identify the skills that were evaluated or discussed during the interview process. Ensure that your resume highlights these skills prominently, providing specific examples or experiences that demonstrate your proficiency.

For New Zealand employers, "fit" is really important and is often the key deciding factor as to who gets the job. What makes "fit" so important? My thoughts are this, our personal traits, personality are who we are and therefore not easy to change, nor should we have to. However, skills can be taught. If you're missing a certain skill a hiring manager needs, such as Xero, but they can see your personality and values align with their team and culture, they will teach you Xero. Who you are as a person, your morals and personality are just as important as your experience when hiring managers are looking for the right "fit". Remember "fit" works both ways, the company, team and culture needs to be the right for you too!

What jumped out to you when you read the job posting? Emphasize how the role is a good match to your skills, your experience and what you have accomplished in your career. Highlight your key skills, experience and provide examples to show how well you will fit in this role, but also how you would be a good fit for their company culture.

Do your homework. It is such a huge payoff to know of the business you are applying for. Cruise the website. I'm sure their Marketing and IT team would thank you for that. Additionally, try to get a feel for the culture. Lastly, remember that this is a mutual professional relationship. If you do not feel that this aligns well with what you are looking for, have that courageous conversation with the business.

This makes it easier for a company to know that you're on the same level as them, or if you're not where can they improve.

Nowadays if you don't create visibility to your achievements is like they don't exist, and on an interview process, your time is very short to showcase all your skills and achievements, so prepare yourself. When the interview asks, "Do you have any questions for us" make sure to volley back to them by asking "are there any topics that we covered today that you would like for me to touch on additionally?" For example, I remember I was once told that it was impressive that I went back to University as a mature student. They didn't care for the degree but the ability to go back and take that on was impressive. So from then on, I made sure there was some highlight to me going back to university to take on a challenge - either on my resume or in future interviews.

If your resume got your foot in the door for an interview, there may not be anything wrong with your resume. However, interviews themselves are a skill you can improve on. If you're landing interviews, but not getting jobs, you may want to focus on how you are answering the interview questions instead. Always read your resume before an interview, know what's on there, and be able to give concrete examples of what you did in your prior positions to showcase your abilities. Plus, the right job is often just around the corner, and the ones you don't get lead you to the one that is meant for you!

When attending an interview, I encourage my clients to think about the reason the interviewer is asking each question. Yes they want to find out more about you, but what are they looking for from your answer? Have you shown what makes you a good fit, by demonstrating the personal traits they value. Have you provided examples which showcase your technical skills and how you added value. I would also like you to keep in mind, that some interviewers are not used to interviewing people, may have not been trained in this skill and could have a level of nerves themselves. So don't underestimate the value of a friendly smile and you ability to build rapport, and show the hiring manager what you are like to work with. All the best!
