Protecting public health and the environment
关于我们
We are a passionate and experienced team that works to protect public health, the environment and local waters of south central Wisconsin through innovation, sustainability and resource recovery. Established in 1930 to protect the lakes and streams of the upper Yahara watershed, Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District today serves 26 customer communities covering some 184 square miles and 380,000 people in the Madison, Wisconsin area. The District owns and operates 141 miles of pipe and 18 regional pumping stations that convey approximately 41 million gallons of wastewater to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant each day. Organized as a municipal corporation, the District is a leader in sustainability and resource reclamation. The District is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the County Executive. The Board is responsible for setting policy, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and establishing District directions. Wastewater treatment for the entire District area is performed at the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant. District staff are responsible for the design and maintenance of the interceptor collection sewers and for the pumping stations that convey wastewater from over 40 municipal customers across Dane County to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Spotted on the streets: infrastructure ads on buses! While clean water infrastructure is primarily unseen, 30,000-70,000 people view a single Metro Transit bus across the service area each day. Because we're looking to increase awareness of invisible but essential wastewater systems, these bus ads help us get a lot of visual miles out of one message. In these photos, director of communications and public affairs Amanda Wegner, MBA finds installations of our "No stopping us now" artwork in Madison. We'll take it from here. https://lnkd.in/g2T6R6uv

Last fall, we partnered with Tim O’Brien Homes and Dave Jones plumbing staff on salt use reduction techniques, specifically installing blending valves as a default feature in new homes. We’re proud to report that Tim O’Brien Homes and Dave Jones have successfully installed 66 blending valves in their builds. That’s a 10% reduction in salt use compared to fully softened water. ?????? Congratulations and thank you for your efforts to prevent chloride pollution! Learn more about blending valves: https://lnkd.in/g-FwPsPW

We all benefit from the unseen clean water infrastructure that ensures wastewater moves from our homes and businesses. But most don't think about it. To improve public consciousness on wastewater infrastructure, our Fall outreach campaign highlights these invisible but critical systems. Our goal is to try to move the needle on public consciousness about wastewater infrastructure. We'll take it from here. https://lnkd.in/g2T6R6uv

We're celebrating 10 years of road salt reduction success! Our road salt reduction grant program supports organizations that minimize chloride pollution through improved road salt management. Since 2014, the team has awarded $286,000 in funding through 31 grants to organizations across Dane County! Read more about the grant program and three success stories with The Bruce Company, Village of Shorewood Hills and Barnes, Inc. on our blog.

The District has partnered with the Madison Public Market Foundation and the City of Madison, WI on creative P(ee)SA designs for the Public Market's bathrooms. Today, September 17, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Wisconsin Chapter hosted a news conference at the State Capitol to unveil the 2024 Report Card for Wisconsin's Infrastructure. Wisconsin’s wastewater infrastructure received a D+ in the report, down from a C- a few years ago and is one of the few categories to score worse. District principal engineer Eric Dundee represented the water and wastewater industries to speak about the critical need to invest in the community's aging infrastructure. Jennifer Hurlebaus, capital planning engineer for the collection system, was also present to support the event, as she was on the ASCE Wisconsin Section team that worked on the report card.
