The most difficult part of creating a strong mission statement is being willing to be honest about who you aren't or who you don't serve. There needs to be a balance, and I'm not saying that you should be uber specific about who you serve (because we all have a feeling in our guts that ideal client avatars don't work as well as we've been promised they do). What I am saying is that you need to be uber specific about what your organization stands for. Good missions statements should both attract and repel others. If it doesn't do that, then it's time to get even more honest. The dynamic power of an amazing mission statement lies in that polarizing quality. If we aren't for you, we should definitely repel you.
