1 Find a relevant cause

The first step is to find a cause that aligns with your interests, values, and goals. You want to volunteer for an organization that has a mission that you care about and that can benefit from your BI skills. For example, you could volunteer for a non-profit that works on social, environmental, or educational issues and needs help with data analysis, visualization, or reporting. You could also look for opportunities to volunteer for BI-related events, such as conferences, workshops, or hackathons, where you can showcase your expertise and meet other BI enthusiasts.

In my experience, people will reach out via LinkedIn, asking for help, and wondering whether you could help them with some issue they are having. It is always rewarding and refreshing to help someone outside your network that comes with a case that is alien to you.

The second step is to offer value and learn from your volunteering experience. You want to demonstrate your BI skills and knowledge, but also be open to feedback and new ideas. You can use your volunteering as a way to practice your BI techniques, learn new tools or methods, or explore new domains or industries. In my experience, people reach out via Linkedin, when they see that I have expertise in a field that has them stumped. Often people feel that they might be wasting your time and are looking for a quick answer, but I always do a deep dive to appreciate the full extent of the question and the reason it was asked, in order to give the most complete answer. This always offers the most value.

3 Build relationships

The third step is to build relationships with the people you meet through your volunteering. You want to go beyond exchanging business cards or LinkedIn requests and establish genuine connections. You can do this by following up with them after the volunteering, expressing your gratitude and appreciation, and showing interest in their work or projects. You can also keep in touch with them regularly, by sharing relevant BI resources, articles, or opportunities, or by inviting them to join other BI events or groups. You can also ask them for referrals, recommendations, or introductions to other BI contacts in their network.

Often they will appreciate the help they received to the extent that they will look out for favorable positions should you need that. Offering your time and/or resources to someone strange to you leaves a lasting impression of good will

Gerade durch Wiederholung und Vertiefung kann man wirkliches Fachdom?nen Know-How aufbauen, gerade im BI Kontext ist es ungeheuer wichtig, auch die fachlichen Fragestellungen tiefgründig zu verstehen, nur so kann eine BI L?sung eine wirklich passende Antwort liefern und Probleme l?sen.
