Antes de comenzar un gráfico de velocidad hay que pensar en el eterno dilema del desarrollo de software ?cuál es la medida de la velocidad? ?Horas por programador por semana x mes? ?Cantidad de líneas de código? ?Story points? ?Unidades funcionales desarrolladas del MVP? Según mi experiencia, la más adecuada son los SP. Conviene adoptarlos como única medida, sin hacer mixturas al estilo 1 hora = 3 SP, o simillares. Al principio cuesta calcularlos, pero siguiendo las recomendaciones y tutoriales de Mike Cohn, llega un momento en que el equipo acepta que se les mida la evolución de su trabajo (ese es otro punto: los desarrolladores suelen ser reacios a estas mediciones), porque ven que es un cálculo consistente.

Cuando comenzé a usar SP en mi rol de SM, mi equipo estaba compuesto por gente senior y por gente junior, era bastante desparejo el nivel. Usábamos Fibonacci, y en las primeras sesiones observé que los seniors calculaban más tiempo para las tareas simples que los juniors. Pensé que era un mecanismo mental preventivo. Instauré que debatieran respetuosamente en público los dos extremos calculados. Grande fue mi sorpresa: los seniors no calculaban más para "cubrirse", sino que extralimitaban siempre el scope de una historia puntual. Los juniors se limitaban a pensar sólo en esa HU, no iban más allá de la misma. Esto permitió ajustar las visiones de ambos, por si uno desconocía algo por inexperiencia o si el otro veía demasiado lejos.

Las limitaciones de usar un gráfico son las mismas que tiene cualquier pensamiento que se centra en las skills usadas o en los procedimientos, y no se es capaz de ver más allá. Un gráfico de desarrollo de software difícilmente pueda medir calidad, salvo que sea tan malo que las quejas inunden los emails. Comparar equipos entre sí puede llegar a ser devastador, lo he visto hacer, y he comprobado como el equipo más lento era tomado como más reducido intelectualmente (literal), sin comprender que ese equipo desarrollaba y hacía mantenimiento de sistemas al mismo tiempo. Mostrar los resultados sin saber los condicionantes de las tareas, y si estas son homogéneas respecto al resto, no solo no sirve, es una práctica pésima.

Podemos estar midiendo un gráfico en SP, otro en horas hombre, otro en funcionalidades, y forzar comparaciones haciendo alquimia para unificarlos tipo 1 hora desarrollador = x n SP = x Sprints terminados = x funcionalidades desarrolladas. La tendencia natural y humana es elegir el que mejores resultados muestra en cada sprint. Se pueden hacer todos ellos si se quiere trabajar con precisiones, máxime al arrancar o con equipos con poco rodaje, pero se debe fijar uno de referencia para todo el proyecto.
