Creating a value stream map requires defining the scope and purpose of the map, gathering data and information about the process, drawing the current state map, analyzing it, drawing the future state map, and implementing and monitoring it. To define the scope and purpose, you need to consider what process you're mapping, who your customer or user is, what value they expect from you, and your objectives and metrics for improvement. When gathering data and information about the process, you can use interviews, observations, surveys, documents, or other sources to capture activities, resources, inputs, outputs, and metrics of each step. You can also use tools such as sticky notes or software to organize your data. Drawing the current state map involves using symbols, icons, arrows, and colors to represent elements of your process. You can also add data such as cycle time or customer satisfaction to quantify performance of each step. Analyzing the current state map involves asking questions about main problems or challenges in the process and sources of waste or inefficiency. Drawing the future state map involves using analysis and improvement ideas to design a new process that eliminates or minimizes waste and inefficiency while maximizing value for customer and organization. Implementing and monitoring the future state involves using a plan-do-check-act cycle to execute improvement actions as well as feedback loops and reviews to monitor performance and identify new opportunities for improvement.
