A paper prototype for instance doesn't particularly need to be made by a software. Low fidelity prototyping and high fidelity prototyping with tools like Figma, Protopie, Framer, etc. make a world of difference but can take up more time and resources to create.

As always methods will depend on your goals, budget, and timeline. Low-fidelity is a good choice if you want to test something with a team since it won't lead to a discussion of colors. You can move fast and iterate often with medium to high-fidelity prototypes (without complex interactions). They are easy to create in your preferred design tool so you can test not super complex flows. The highest-fidelity prototypes demonstrate your UI's functionality, interaction, and animation with code or code-like tools. Creating a test script, which includes the tasks you want the participant to complete can really add structure to your session. Including metrics like 'time on task' and 'succes rate' can help assess your solution, and possibly asking the user how easy/hard it was to complete this specific task.

Depending on the type of test you're conducting with your UI prototype (especially with usability testing), you can do a few things to ensure you're getting the best results. 1. Make room to accommodate spontaneous changes during the test itself. 2. Have a script to guide the test itself will keep you on the right path all through it. 3. Perform a dry run first before engaging with your testers. 4. Do not interfere with participants during the test 5. Watch out for observable conflicts between what the participants are saying or reporting and their behaviour during the test. 6. Use pre-test and post-test questionnaires whenever possible to prepare your participants and capture their thoughts after. 7. Write a usability report.

Be very conscious that any insights derived from your prototype testing is a direct result of the people that participated in the study. Make sure you are testing with people that accurately represent your target audience to ensure the study findings are reliable.
