How can you use trend analysis to improve resource forecasting?

When collecting data, it can seem quite overwhelming. These days, we have no shortage of data available. So, where do we start? I always tell people to establish one or two questions, at the most, that they are trying to answer at a time. For example, if I want to forecast my monthly sales, one aspect I may need to consider is seasonality. Are people more willing to buy during some months more than others? So, I might collect all the historical sales data from the last three years into a spreadsheet, clearly labeled with month and year. Then, I might compare each month's sales to the average monthly sales and calculate a percentage difference. This will allow me to see if sales consistently move up or down during the same month each year.

The collecting and organization of data is critical in almost every instance and Trend Analysis is no different. If the data gathered is incorrect or not applicable to the issue at hand it serves no purpose and results in a net loss for time and money. If the data is organized in a way that prevents it from being understood or effectively used it provides no utility. In order to conduct an effective Trend Analysis an organization must start with the most accurate data available organized in a way that allows for maximum understanding and application with that organization.

It’s great to talk about trend analysis because it is a great resource for many facets of life, business and everything in between. Unfortunately, terms and verbiage are all regurgitated in every article without presenting the value of trend analysis. More often than not we accomplish trend analysis in everyday life but don’t refer to it as such. For instance, assessing traffic when planning your commute, assessing weather when planning wardrobe choices or factors of weather that also affect commuting. There are so many ways we use trend analysis that don’t require a bunch of $0.25 words to $0.10 people. KISS or Keep It Simple Stupid is your best bet and not overthinking the task.
