How can you use testimonials to build trust with donors?

I agree, authenticity creates trust. Gaining trust of donors would be adding to the overall strengthening of the relationship. Over time, the nonprofit will benefit monetarily from such a relationship.

Being authentic does not mean you coerce communities to paint a false picture, it means allowing them to tell the story as it is. This way you don’t create a false narrative on the impact a project has brought. It’s not true that donors only want to hear how successful your project has been, they also want to understand whether a modality or approach used is feasible or whether there is need for a different way of doing business. Painting a false picture does not only affect your organization but also de franchises the community you work with because it creates a false perception thus denying them opportunities. Allow communities to speak for themselves, don’t be their mouthpiece when they can talk for themselves

You can use short testimonials that tap into the emotions you want to air - joy, relief, acheivement, celebration, guilt, etc. - or longer case studies, in many different formats.

While it is good for you through the communities to tell the successes a project has brought, it is equally important to talk about the challenges and gaps you were not able to fill. It is worth noting that when implementing a project, it should not be about you but the greater population you reach with support. As such, don’t shy away from being open and sharing your experience beyond the funders of your project. You should realize that after you others will come with new projects and might use your reports to understand what their intervention should entail. So be authentic and tell it as it is. You can only do as much and within your scope. By being open you allow others to contribute further towards deriving sustainable outcomes

Give the beneficiary a chance to highlight how the project has been a game changer, let them also identify challenges and possible solutions. transparency is key! Always remember honesty is the best policy. In my experience... people have appreciated seeing the transparent side of me.
