1 Choose a global issue

The first step in designing a PBL project that promotes global awareness is to choose a relevant and meaningful issue that affects people across the world. For example, you could ask your students to investigate the causes and effects of climate change, human rights, poverty, or migration. You can use technology to help your students explore different aspects of the issue, such as its history, geography, politics, economics, and culture. You can also use technology to help your students find authentic data, statistics, and evidence to support their arguments and solutions.

In my history classes for non-majors, I have chosen food and medicine as global issues, as these items are directly relatable to the daily lives of everyone. For non-majors, selecting topics which they can tangibly see the relevance is helpful in facilitating greater understanding of the purpose and workings of the historical discipline. In terms of technology--the use of internet search databases in my case--it is also easy to find historical data on the two topics, as long as you know what you are trying to search for.

2 Connect with a global audience

The second step in designing a PBL project that promotes global awareness is to connect your students with a global audience that can provide them with feedback, insights, and perspectives. For example, you could use technology to facilitate online interactions with other students, teachers, experts, or organizations from different countries or regions. You can use technology to create platforms for sharing, such as blogs, podcasts, videos, or websites. You can also use technology to enable synchronous or asynchronous communication, such as video conferencing, chat, or email.

University libraries subscribe to many online databases which provide students to connect to sources from all across the world. One database which I encourage students to use a lot is the Factiva database as it gives wide coverage of recent sources all across the globe, over multiple languages. One can easily choose the regions, countries and languages you are interested as well.

3 Reflect on global learning

The third step in designing a PBL project that promotes global awareness is to encourage your students to reflect on their global learning experiences and outcomes. For example, you could use technology to help your students document their learning process, such as creating portfolios, journals, or e-books. You can also use technology to help your students evaluate their learning outcomes, such as using rubrics, surveys, or quizzes. You can also use technology to help your students celebrate their learning achievements, such as creating digital badges, certificates, or awards.

One aspect is to ask studnets to orientate their research questions and topics globally. At the same time, they should be aware that "global" does not need to encompass the whole world, but rather it can be restricted to a few pertinent examples which illustrate various global characteristics. Ask students to read up on what other scholars have done and think about how to define global for their own research topics.

4 Develop global competencies

The fourth step in designing a PBL project that promotes global awareness is to help your students develop global competencies that will prepare them for the future. Global competencies are the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values that enable people to interact effectively and respectfully with others in a diverse and interconnected world. Through PBL, you can foster critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, citizenship, and culture. Technology can be used to provide your students with opportunities to practice these global competencies in meaningful contexts. By leveraging technology to choose a global issue, connect with a global audience, reflect on global learning, and develop global competencies, you can help your students become more informed, engaged, and responsible global citizens. This will ultimately result in a more comprehensive understanding of the world and its inhabitants.
