Team Assessments are highly dependent on the corporate culture. These tools can be extremely valuable to help you take a pulse on the team culture and Leadership effectiveness. However, some people do not feel they can be honest on these assessments for fear of retribution. It is important you find a way to permit people to share their opinions with anonymity. Then you increase your odds for valuable feedback. You need to balance the feedback with other indicators to determine areas for improvement that warrant all hands on deck to course correct. My advice is to choose the right tool, train your leadership to support the process, and make sure there is follow-up to acknowledge your learnings and action plans.

Having undergone team assessments myself in Military I sincerely feel that team assessments encompass comprehensive surveys or tests designed to delve into the intricate fabric of skills, behaviors, attitudes, and values exhibited by each team member. Choosing the right assessment is critical if you don't create you own. Creating your own requires a clear objective for the overall assessment and objectives for each question so respondent's answers are consistent contextually. Whether purchased or custom, knowing the context of the assessment and it's questions is key.

Most team assessments focus on the team dynamics only. A true team assessment would first focus on the individuals and provide insight into how they can bring their being and doing strengths or assets to the team. Once we know who is best at thinking through certain types of problems, we can build trust. Until then, we end up with the loudest voices being heard. When conducting the team assessment, you must be sure that you are measuring all three (3) dimensions of the human soul... thinking, emotions/energy, and actions/behaviors/personality. Until you have a complete picture of the team, you are just putting band-aids on symptoms rather than addressing and utilizing the root causes that create the results.

I have found that team assessments are most powerful when discussing as a team. Everyone should have time to digest their results beforehand but putting an action plan together as a team is key if you want them to buy in and be engaged. Finding the right assessment is important, but how leaders manage the actions after obtaining the results is more important.

In order to get the most out of these assessments, the person doing them needs training to standardize the process. I’ve seen three different people conduct an assessment on the same team and they each had wildly different results. The assessor needs to understand unconscious bias and how to overcome it to give a true assessment

Collect and Analyse Feedback: Once team members have completed the assessment, collect the feedback. 4. As mentioned above, assessments should be repeated to look for trends, but also because many people will respond based on a gut reaction or feelings at the time they take the assessment. To ensure enough participation, it's best to limit the number of questions to top 1-3 questions that allow quick responses, but open-ended questions or comments sections for more verbose answers.

There are many assessments to choose from. Be sure to match up your objectives with the right one. People talk about DISC; the birds; the colors, etc... Sadly, it has been my observation that after people take these assessments, they are soon forgotten. There is no encouragement from managers to use the 'language and results' of what they have learned on a daily basis for the purpose of conflict resolution, communication, and engagement.
