1 Choose a clear focal point

One of the memorable examples is a scene from Pixar's "Finding Nemo". A scene where Marlin and Dory are swimming through the ocean. In one particular instance, Marlin and Dory encounter a school of jellyfish. The jellyfish are depicted in vibrant, glowing colors, standing out against the usual blue, ocean background. Also, the movement of the jellyfish helps to emphasize them as the main focal point of the scene. This is one instance of using contrast in color as well as movement/motion as the animators guide audience's eyes towards the jellyfish - moving the attention from Marlin and Dory for the particular scene.

2 Avoid clutter and distraction

I've come to realize that more often than not, less is more. By reducing down many of the elements to the main subject, we can then focus on putting more emphasis on certain emotional core of the scene. One example is a movie "Up" from Pixar. There is a touching scene where Carl is sitting alone in his house reminiscing about Ellie, his late wife. The set is kept very simple. The color is subdued too to give the emotional weight. Through the use of negative space and focused composition, viewer's eyes are led towards Carl who's sitting in a soft light surrounded by shadows. By simplifying and removing unnecessary elements, this creates a clear focal point on Carl with his emotions allowing us to fully immerse with the moment.

Many times, when recording reference footage, animators might default to the straight on camera position because we are used to taking posed photos directly in front of the camera. However, in animation we rarely compose shots head on. Animating shots head on comes with its own challenges such as more exaggerated foreshortening. Moving your camera even 30 degrees to the right or left of the character will provide more clarity and appeal. Remember that actions are often “cheated out” or rotated so that they look better for the audience. We do rely on real world positioning but we are not limited by it. Whatever looks great from the cameras perspective guides the animation.
