The most important use of the slate is for carrying out the line up of shots in post production smoothly. For shots to refer in the edit there are two things that go hand in hand- 1. Slate 2. Log Sheet A Log sheet will contain the details written on the slate - shot number, take number, scene number along with their respective clip names that an AD procures from the camera unit and the sound unit. On standard film sets, the camera only record the video & the sound is recorded separately on a boom & lapel mic. The slate’s clap is used to match the video & audio. The sound of the clap and the visual of the clap is matched in the edit for getting a synced audio-visual.

A standard clap will have 1. Title of the project 2. Name of the director 3. Name of the DOP 4. Scene number (as on the shooting script) 5. Shot number 6. Take number 7. Exterior/ Interior - where is the scene taking place 8. Day/ Night (as on the shooting script)

This summary is not the best advice. The read out of the scene and take number has to happen AFTER camera and sound confirm speed/rolling. Otherwise the information is not recorded in the sound file, which at times can be valuable for matching files. Also, don't repeat the production name. All files on the cards will be from the same production. It's unnecessary time and information. Make sure the camera operator has the slate in focus, move it necessary. And give the camera operator time to refocus on talent and confirm 'camera set' if necessary before the director calls 'action'. If there is an issue with the slate, you can consider a tail slate at the end of the take as backup. Coordinate with the crew on that.
