Whatever your reasons, it's important to frame these experiences positively.

I started my career at Aerotek and spent 7 years there, recruiting for various industries including engineering, environmental, construction, architecture, accounting/finance, biotech, etc. TEKSystems is a sister company that specializes in the tech industry. I've placed many people on contract roles, others were contract-to-hire (turned into full time employee), as well as direct hire. Other companies do similar types of placements. However, I'm not referring to the traditional "temp" agency for 1-3 day temporary work. Contract roles are a great way to get your foot in the door.

One thing I have always found helpful is make your hands dirty in the hiring initiatives, use your network , social platforms and creative thought hiring process through LinkedIn network , it has immensely helped me a lot to hire right choices for the job .

Group pages (especially on Facebook) can be a gem for finding opportunities/offering services. Other ideas: local library programs, nonprofits, community/recreation centers, college/university programs (email faculty), small business owners, student-run programs, churches, programs serving targeted populations…

Nonprofits are ALWAYS in need of more resources and talent. Doing reduced rate or pro bono work around a cause you are genuinely passionate about will fill your psychological bucket in a way that few other things can. It gets the focus off of you for a little while and on to a purpose that makes the world a better place.

The advice given so far are fantastic and what I will add is go into the short-term opportunities with the mindset, work ethic and attitude as if it was a long-term opportunity. Create value and become an asset through working with pride and passion. Long-term or FTE opportunities give a false sense of security, nothing is truly "Permanent". Create your own opportunities once you get your foot in the door. As long as the work is challenging/interesting and aligns to your passion, the rest will fall into place.
