A critical part of defining the purpose, and this constitutes to the term leader, is setting and agreeing the context For example, before facilitating partiticipants to agree on meeting goals, the leader first ask the group to agree why they were there Being a leader, s/he may want to provide an initial context as a start: the symptoms, the effect, etc. and facilitate the group to agree the problems and the questions to address In large (and diverse) group, setting and agreeing the context can be challenging and define how being a servant (helping the group to agree on purpose) needs to be balanced with being a leader (helping the group to understand the context)

2 Design the process

Once you have a shared purpose, you need to design a process that will enable the group to achieve it. A servant leader does not dictate the process, but rather facilitates it with the group. You can use tools such as agendas, ground rules, roles, and formats to structure the process and ensure clarity, transparency, and accountability. In the large group setting, individuals’ willingness to participate can vary drastically. Some are so comfortable speaking up that they can dominate the conversation; others are naturally predisposed to hang back and feel most comfortable listening. Part of my role in creating a safe container for the group involves deliberately making space for, and actively encouraging, the quieter voices to share. I often use the brownie analogy, which I learned during yoga teacher training, at the beginning of a session: Imagine there’s a large platter of brownies in the center of the room. There are enough brownies for every participant. Some of you may want to have two and I encourage that – but not before everyone has had the chance to take one.

4 Deliver the results

After the facilitation, you need to deliver the results that the group has achieved. A servant leader does not take credit for the outcomes, but rather celebrates and shares them with the group.
