Role-playing is a great way to simulate real-life scenarios that leaders may encounter on an everyday basis, practice their responses, and get alternate perspectives and feedback. It is also helpful when a leader is seeking to change any default behavior pattern. Repetition during role-plays helps in behavior change by creating new neural pathways that support how a leader wants to show up in the world during critical scenarios, e.g., while dealing with a difficult customer, during a difficult conversation, negotiation, handling conflict, etc. They can also practice skills like 'active listening during role plays. Role-playing works because it creates customized learning and is a safe space for executives to try alternate approaches.

Role-playing is a useful coaching intervention for practicing difficult conversations or preparing for interviews but it goes beyond that too. I've used role playing to help my clients play out and process a difficult relationship in the workplace and gain awareness into how it has affected them. Sometimes, if a client is internally conflicted by something, role play can be helpful in playing out both sides of the conflict. You can use it as creatively as you like! And it's an amazing way to help clients grow more aware of how they relate to others, or sometimes how they understand themselves and what's important to them.

I call it turning the table. Not exactly the same, but similar. The idea is to try to understand someone else's perspective. Role-playing will help achieve the same. As mentioned, it helps simulate real-life situations, just as fire drills do. By role-playing , individuals can anticipate and prepare for different scenarios, enhancing their problem-solving skills and adaptability in various situations. For leaders, role-playing serves as a valuable tool for personal growth and building stronger relationships with others.
