Recording music is not just a matter of capturing sound, but also of creating sound. Rock music is often characterized by distorted guitars, powerful drums, and energetic vocals. To achieve this sound, you can use various recording techniques such as overdriving your guitar amp or using a pedal to create distortion and sustain, close miking and compression on drums to emphasize their punch and presence, using a dynamic or condenser microphone on vocals with some EQ and reverb to make them stand out and blend with the instruments, as well as experimenting with different mic placements and angles to capture the room ambience and the interaction between the instruments. With these techniques, you can create a dynamic sound that will bring your music to life.
In certain cultures the percussion and rhythm instruments are equal to the harmonic and melodic instruments. Audiences who are familiar with salsa, jazz, Latin jazz, Caribbean and African forms listen to the percussion as a conversation not just as 'keeping the beat'. When recording and mixing these instruments you want them to be 'present' while keeping a balance. In other words, they should be heard without depending on bringing up the level. This is done mainly in the mix by working with the frequencies i.e. eq and certain plug-ins -- in salsa the recipe on the congas is gated reverb and combining long and short reverb and delay but that might be different for African djembe which is really dependent on the mic-ing.

Recording technique for pop music : Contrary to classical music (and jazz, to some extent) pop music ( and rock) is about creating and crafting a sound. Playing around with processings at the recording stage is seen as creative and can lead to new ideas. For instance, any track with a lot of rev or delay can be sent to the drummer's headphones for the sole purpose to inspire him/her with new ideas. Synths are more present in pop music than rock. Recording vintage keyboards (Prophet, Moog) for instance can enhance the sound of the production. Some A-list artists in pop music are well known for their collection of vintage keyboards.
To capture the sound of jazz music, which is often based on improvisation, expression, and interaction, you can use various recording techniques. For example, using ribbon or tube microphones on instruments and vocals can bring out their warmth and richness. Distant or overhead miking on drums can capture their natural dynamics and tone. A stereo pair or a binaural microphone on the ensemble can capture their spatial and sonic relationship. Additionally, leaving some room for natural reverb, noise, and bleed creates a realistic and organic sound.
Often analog boards, warm rooms and mics will give that close-in sound. Despite the appeal of vintage mics, it’s better to go with the latest/best equipment. Don’t compromise on your sound inputs. For live recordings make sure you re-mic or augment mic to capture the sound appropriately. Too many artists rely on the live sound mix and end up with muddy audio that can’t be fixed in mixing.

To capture this sound, you can employ various recording techniques, such as a matched pair or decca tree of condenser microphones on the orchestra or ensemble to capture detail and depth, spot miking on soloists or sections to highlight their features and nuances, and utilizing a high sample rate and bit depth to preserve the fidelity and dynamic range of the sound. Additionally, it is important to avoid excessive processing or editing and respect the musical intention and performance of the musicians.
I’m just going add the golden rule of audio into this, which is as follows: If it sounds good, it sounds good. *Some engineering required Digital audio is something where there is an omnipresence of all the possible sounds, because these systems work on probability and replication in terms of signal flow. Missing that warm analog sound? It’s in there. You just need to carve it out. Learn your frequencies, trust your ears, and make it sound how you want it to sound. Digital audio will replicate ANY sound or resonance you’ve heard before if you tell your DAW to do the right things. Don’t worry if it’s nothing like what this producer or that engineer would do. If it sounds good, it sounds good.
Classic Country Music : Dynamics is key in recording a classic country song. Focusing mostly on vocal being on top. Solid drum and bass tracks recorded by close mics on toms, hi hats and snare drums..(sm57) .. Sennheiser 421 mics are popular for tom drums with AKG D112 or comparable on the kick to get a tight low end sound. Bass guitar through tube pre and compression lightly applied for an even low end. Guitars are usually recorded through vintage tube amps with Shure Sm57 or comparable mics. Acoustic piano miced above the sound board with U47s or comparable condensers.. Vocals mostly a good large diaphragm condenser mic , also perhaps a U47 through a good tube pre.. (just one setup idea) use your ears!
