1 Why question your vision?

What are the challenges and risks of your vision, and how can you overcome them? Additionally, consider the assumptions and beliefs behind your vision to ensure they are valid and supported by evidence. Make sure your vision aligns with the values and goals of your team and organization. Lastly, determine how to measure the progress and impact of your vision. By questioning your vision, you can identify its strengths and weaknesses, address any gaps or inconsistencies, and increase your confidence and credibility.

According to Merriam-Webster, vision is defined as, "a thought, concept, or object formed by the imagination." In effect, vision helps to establish a desired outcome at the conclusion of a period of time, which has lasting value for both people and businesses. Vision also has a multiplier effect if properly crafted, and as a leader, it's absolutely vital to question whether or not you're on track or recognize how external factors might influence the course. Personally, I believe questioning your vision demonstrates humility, which is a leadership trait that allows one to have a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and to be confident without arrogance in order to galvanize a team.

A leader must understand their "signature". In crafting and articulating a vision that aligns with the overall values and goals of the team and organization, a leader benefits from questioning how much of the vision on which they are focused is influenced by their own perspective. Leaders say publicly they are focused on what is good for the organization. If it is not also good for them, they can not sustain the effort needed to achieve the vision. If you want to pinpoint questions to challenge the interplay between your vision and the organization's, identify another senior leader and ask what would they say is their vision? Also ask what is your signature contribution to the vision and what would happen if you were not there to make it?

2 How to question your audience?

Having a clear and compelling vision is essential, but you also need to communicate it to your audience. Questioning them can help you understand their needs, interests, and concerns, and tailor your message accordingly. You could ask questions like: what are their current challenges and opportunities? How do they feel about the current situation and the future direction? What expectations and hopes do they have from you as a leader? How do they relate to your vision? What resonates with them and what doesn't? What questions or objections do they have about your vision? How can you address them? And how can they contribute to your vision, and what support and resources do they need? By questioning your audience, you can build rapport, empathy, and trust, while creating a dialogue that invites feedback and input.

When we question our audience, it enables us to listen more actively and deeply to the responses. The resultant effect of this process is a more collaborative as well as cohesive approach to visioning. A leader can create a vision and communicate it. But unless there is buy-in from those who are integral for that vision to turn into a reality, it is difficult to get results from it. Questioning opens up the process to make it more iterative and enables us to revisit and reshape the vision, as necessary, based on the audience's receptivity and resonance with it.

3 How to question for alignment and commitment?

The final step of communicating your vision as a leader is to question for alignment and commitment. This will help to ensure that your vision is shared, understood, and supported by your team and organization, and that everyone is on board and ready to take action. You can ask questions such as how your vision aligns with the mission, vision, and values of the team and organization; how it supports strategic objectives and priorities; what roles and responsibilities are necessary for achieving the vision; what milestones and indicators of success are associated with it; how progress and achievements will be communicated, collaborated on, and celebrated; and what potential obstacles or setbacks may arise and how they will be overcome. By questioning for alignment and commitment, you can create a sense of ownership, accountability, and enthusiasm for your vision, thereby mobilizing your team and organization to make it a reality.
