Negotiating payment terms, such as extended periods or early payment discounts, can be instrumental in cost reduction.

To be effective in procurement ,we need to build a long term relationship with the contractors/vendors. One of the best practice for the cost effective procurement,to keep a fruitful relationship with the vendor and feel them that they are the part of our team .And try to pay them on-time so that they will consider us as an reliable client and will support with their best rates and terms especially in our turbulent times

Guarantee them long term contracts. It is always good to buy from a supplier (if possible) who can fulfill most of your buying needs rather than buying from different suppliers. This can benefit both. Show them your high buying patterns so they can offer you great discounts on that particular item/s. Make sure all their dues are paid off within the agreed time, this creates positive vibes and loyalty.

Every buyer must know what is happening around them and identify how these variables could affect prices and therefore the results of their management. One of the ways to obtain this information from the sector is through suppliers, it is first-hand information and a space of opportunity to identify potential and new projects. Comparing what we currently have with other alternatives on the market is a task that never ends and must be done consistently and under the same criteria in order to obtain a reliable result.

For a negotiation or a meeting, it is ideal to determine the points to be discussed. Determine what the objective is clearly: But also important to know BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement) The ZOPA must be analyzed very carefully and the extent to which both parties will agree must be identified, although it is known that at the beginning of any negotiation both parties are unaware of this space. Focusing on "price" reduction, which has a high level of dependence on material prices, volumes, fixed overheads, and expected profitability is open to variation year on year. CI allows you to truly and sustainably cut out "costs," whether it is waste reduction, process improvement, or specification change. These benefits can be inherited by the supplier for all other customers' business as well. Win-Win! As an example, for services where labour cost is involved, ensuring full utilization of the service provider's personnel means they do not need to inflate prices to cover the risk of resource underutilisation.

Something else to consider is design to cost, when applicable. D2C allows companies to capture know-how of partner suppliers at design stage, enabling cost reduction early on. Of course this requires strong supplier relationship as to maintain cost effectiveness and sustainability after start of production.

1. What has worked in my career is bulk procurement. Procurement good that will cover a certain period according to your procurement pattern. This procurement you not only make it easy to negotiate on material but also on transport.
