How can you use professional development to retain top talent?

Learning and Development is a continuous process. If you help your employees learn/develop skills which interests them or will help them to grow in their career , they are more likely to stay for long term as they will feel motivated.

In addition to this companies should deem the development of their staff as a way to develop their exisiting business. If team memebers feel held back and restricted will encourage them to look at opportunities outside of their existing role or even the company itself. Feedback is probably the easiest way to help with development, encouraging and motivatinf when things have been done well and providing feedback to make good great, or supporting in areas they need to improve.

Learning and growing never stops! When company support their employees in learning new things and developing workforce skills that they enjoy or that can help them in their future careers, they are more likely to stick around for a long time. Workforce will feel super motivated and creates positive environment

It’s important to understand what are some of the goals that top talent have. Stay Interviews are useful to determine which professional development opportunities are most relevant to top talent. Many top talent have a goal to be in their manager’s role, while others have aspirations to learn a new business line. Previous stay interviews have shown that some top talent had philanthropic aspirations. It is best to hear from top talent how they want to develop prior to investing the time and resources into professional development opportunities.

Professional development continues the learning experience within an organizational or institutional setting. It cannot be trivialized to just on the job training. The way we approach what we do and how we’ve learned to do it, reflects who we work for and the culture behind that entity. We learn the most from the culture that sustains or maintains our livelihood. Therefore, if you want to uplift an employee’s morale, offer opportunities for them to learn new skills, technologies, and approaches to everyday tasks in multimodal ways with resources and funding in place to accommodate it. Consistent monitoring and feedback ensured the development of improved skills, job satisfaction, and organizational success.

Something to keep in mind before aligning any development is to consider the passion for learning and voluntary effort involved. Unless there is inner drive to development, organizational effort may go in vein.

In my experience, to build the culture of learning- it is a top-down approach. It is really important to have sponsors promoting and leading this culture in the top chain of command to be able to create the safe space and drive for learning and growth.
