How can you use polymorphism to improve software design?

You need two distinct classes, but more than half of the code in one class is exactly the same as the other. For example, a "Character" base class in a video game, where "Archer" and "Swordsman" are subclasses with specific functions, but share common "render" and "movement" code. 2. You are creating a class for a library. For example, a HelpfulLibraryTextView would make sense to be inheritable/extendable. 3. You are using a class from a library. Like Android's Activity and Fragment.

Modern languages support multiple inheritance via delegation (e g. kotlin) or mixins (e.g. Python). Delegation allows to implement interfaces or absctract properties by delegates: class C(a :A, b: B) : A by a, B by b Where A and B are interfaces, a and b are injected implementations of those interfaces. After all class C implements both A and B interfaces but delegates actual implementation to injected entities which can be easily replaced in DI object graph. This allows to assemble a class from smaller bricks of code and each of those bricks is abstract and implementation can be changed without altering main code e.g. logger interface can write to console or send reports to remote server. Mixins are similar to delegation but less abstract.

Polymorphism allows to hide any 3rd party dependencies from your main codebase. E.g. you want to write abstract DB wrapper. It gives a lot of benefits like ability to easily mock database for tests and for prototyping. Also it allows to change database engine in case when it doesn’t fit requirements anymore (e.g. move from mysql to postgres). Another example: lets assume that you have native Android and iOS apps which have the same accessibility IDs for ui testing. With polymorphism it is possible to have same yi test logic with differences only in actual test driver implementation.

Polymorphism increases boilerplate. E.g. you want to write abstract DB wrapper. This means you need to write an interface with similar methods as your database connector already has then write implementation of this interface which calls those methods of your actual database connector. Also if you have db mock server, you need to implement those methods for mock server as well. This obviously requires more time and effort at the first development iteration than calling db api directly. But this is compensated by less efforts in testing and hugele saves time at future when db framework is changed, e.g. depreciation and replacement of some methods after db library update or even migration from one db engine to another.

Just follow Solid. Prefer composition or delegation, it is more scalable than using inheritance. It is OK to have just one abstract base class which sets up your framework, but using inheritance for business logic is dangerous because sometimes you need to change something in the middle of your inheritance chain which breaks everything. Better to use smaller interfaces which are injected via Dependency Injection framework and DI decides which actual implementations to inject.
