1 Benefits of PBL

PBL can offer many benefits for foreign language learning, such as motivating students to use the target language for a purpose and audience, developing their communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills, exposing them to diverse and authentic sources of information in the target language, allowing them to choose topics and products that interest them, and providing feedback and opportunities for reflection and revision. All of these can help the students improve their language proficiency and metacognitive skills, as well as enhance their intercultural competence and awareness.

Project Based Learning engages students to interact with each other in all the phases, brainstorming together, working, and presenting. It allows plenty of communicative interactions, written or oral. Creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration are a huge part of PBL.

PBL inspires students to explore and realize their potential, fostering learner autonomy where they apply the target language to bridge the gap between their current knowledge and what they need to learn. This process activates and strengthens their skills in communication, collaboration, and both critical and creative thinking. For instance, in studying a Shakespearean drama, students could select an act or scene and create and perform their own short play, delving into a cultural aspect or a scenario pertinent to regions where the language is spoken. Engaging in PBL in a foreign language equips students with various essential skills and knowledge.

Sometimes, I find PBL perfect to motivate my students, as I give them interactive two-people group tasks and the best dialogue (the funniest, the most interesting, the most creative) wins 1 week for free, where they usually in place of 2 lessons try to benefit and have 4 and/or 6 lessons

Great read! PBL increases learning as students are actively constructing their learning. We know from Constructivist theories of education that students learn better when they play an active role in their learning.

2 Steps for PBL

To implement PBL in your foreign language classroom, you need to define a driving question or problem that aligns with the learning objectives and standards of the foreign language curriculum. This question should be relevant, engaging, challenging, and open-ended. Additionally, plan the project scope and timeline, decide on roles and responsibilities of teacher and students, provide resources and support for inquiry and research, help students design and create their products or presentations, facilitate students' sharing and feedback, and evaluate students' learning and performance. The project should be manageable, realistic, and flexible with multiple stages and activities that scaffold students' learning. The teacher should act as a facilitator, coach, and mentor while providing rubrics, checklists, models for language accuracy. Furthermore, arrange opportunities for students to share their products or presentations with an authentic audience. Finally assess students' learning using multiple forms of assessment such as formative or summative assessments.
