This transparency can strengthen relationships and build trust. 4. Train your team Clearly define and train your team on expected behaviors. This helps in setting clear standards and expectations for all.

In most organizations IT is perceived as a cost center with talent focused on operational issues. They all aspire to be part of the innovation train and drive exciting projects. Having a servant leadership approach enables building trust not only within IT but also across various functions that in turns allows for fostering creativity. As you build trust, engaging the teams in hackathons or innovation labs brings the creative juices that in turns enables efficiency and productivity across the organizations.

Creating a culture of participation compels employees to stretch. Nothing grows an employee like expanding the expectations you have of them. By soliciting their feedback and expecting their influence, you force them to think beyond their narrow role & responsibility and go broader. Salespeople who begin to think of the financial implications of a deal grow into the General Managers and P&L's owners of tomorrow.

Leaders should be the last to speak. The number of times I've been in a situation where a leader presents their team with a problem and the conversation goes something like this: "Here's the problem _, I think we need to do __ to fix it. What does everyone think? Let's hear your thoughts" If you are in position of authority and you present an opinion on how to resolve an issue, you immediately shut down the opportunity for conversation and creativity to happen because your direct reports might not feel comfortable voicing an idea that might differ from yours. Present the problem, give others neutral space to share thoughts, and save your opinion for the end after thoughtfully considering all the ideas that have been laid on the table

Don't forget to solicit feedback and participation from all groups within the company. For example, administrative staff have a birds eye view of executive management and can quickly pinpoint where conversations went off the rails. Sometimes we focus on participative leadership only within peer groupings but people who work on the line, in the stores and those who schedule your meetings see how big ideas play out in real life. This is critical information to have.

When team members feel involved and their opinions are respected, their morale and engagement tend to rise. They feel like valued contributors rather than simply following orders. Open communication is a cornerstone of participative leadership. This helps in building an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, raising concerns, and working together to solve problems.

Stop Telling, Start Asking: The Leadership Shift!! Participative leadership fosters stronger teams by empowering every member to have a voice, which drives innovation and commitment. To be honest, this isn’t easy. Trust and the ability to collaborate are the bedrock of this leadership style. However, in my view, one aspect that is often overlooked is the ability to listen—making the team feel that their input is heard and, more importantly, acted upon.
