Still wondering why I claim the above to be successful in open innovation? It is through their Add-on and Plug-in marketplaces enabling and empowering individual developers to co-create and innovate on top of their main products such as gmail, docs, workplace, among others. Very often as I have experienced, these open innovators (developers) are from the background of frustated customers, partners (existing vendors), willing to-become-ally competitors.

In essence, open innovation empowers organizations with external knowledge, efficiency, and competitiveness. As below- 1. Diversity of Insights: Access varied ideas and perspectives 2. So far, the main benefits of open innovation has been to realize the importance of collaboration and also to learn to collaborate between people and organizations. Since the paradigm of open or closed systems has shifted towards more flexibility, open innovation initiatives in organizations are frequently assessed by the process classification: Outside-in: The case an organization is absorbing external knowledge, where the typical case will be a start-ups collaboration with established organizations. Inside-out: When knowledge is developed in-house of an organization but it's shared to tested, or utilized externally by licensing it, displaying incubators, etc. Coupled processes: Coupled includes both the outside-in and inside-out processes. There’s no one size fits all path for open innovation. It will depend on the process the organization envisions to implement, its ecosystem, and its business model. For instance a big Oil & Gas corporation could start mergers and acquisitions renewables to grow capabilities and introduce tech and knowledge. Or a Web2 tech giant could establish incubators, and alliances with Web3 blockchains and Dapps. However, in general the right way to begin is to clarify the challenge we want to address in our strategic plan to ensure the alignment of resources and proper support at the highest levels. Those preliminary decisions will enable the approach we decided to go for.

The key is to implementing open innovation is the willingness to conduct "experiments". In The Innovator’s Hypothesis, Michael Schrage offers a simple "5x5" model -- designing an approach that can be accomplished by 5 people, in 5 weeks, with a $5,000 investment. If this doesn't seem possible, then the experiment is likely being designed wrong... and/or the underlying idea isn't viable.

In order for an open innovation model to work, I believe these three things are critical: + Product & the addons getting identified as one brand by the consumer + Parties involved in open innovation have minimal to zero conflicts; requires a conflict resolution mechanism + The roles and responsibilities of entities involved is continuously inline with customer delight and must be customer obsessed

The rules to overcome the challenges are simple at any given point: 1) Consumer’s/end customer’s success and delight shall be treated as utmost priority by all the entities involved in an open innovation 2) Clear mechanism shall be set for collectively agreeable revenue share that is directly proportionate to the contribution made by each player towards the consumer’s success

Challenges are several, as experts such as Henry Chesbrough highlight. However, the weight could be mostly distributed in two sections, the one of the culture of the organization and the other one related to the management of the innovation. The culture aspect is about how an organization perceives itself, its vision, mission, and values. It is not the same if an organization describes itself as an Oil & Gas company or if instead does so as an Energy company. The latter will be more prone to change. The new knowledge could be against the. the politics involved.

Open innovation is all about like minded individuals and similar visioned organisations coming together to form a syndicate to serve the consumer (end customer). The members of such syndicate shall confine to a particular decorum. Earlier the syndicate consisted of just employees or individuals belonging to one organization. Whereas in the future, due to the open innovation trend, I believe that there is going to be a huge potential for blockchain based consensus mechanism involving smart contracts and oracles and Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) to ensure the smooth execution of day-to-day operations of such syndicate. The syndicate could turn into an ecosystem some day.
