Labour unions are key stakeholders in any organisation's growth. However, the management may overlook the challenges they face and that may lead to conflict. In such a situation, the following steps would help: 1. Have an open conversation with their leaders to understand the problem areas and offer your support in resolving them. 2. Listen to them intently. Also, help them see your perspective by being empathetic and supportive. 3. Promise what you can deliver and then take necessary action to meet your commitment. 4. Don't give in to unreasonable demands as that may lead to bigger conflict in the future, maybe even blackmailing. In a conflict, usually, the two sides have strong feelings against each other. Keep calm at all times.

One thing I've found extremely helpful when establishing trust with a potential partner is the ability to adapt. Knowing when a topic is important to the other team and utilizing those moments to dive-deep into their interests; showing an authentic investment in what's at the top of their to-do list. With over 40 years as a labor activist, I have to chuckle at some of these suggestions. If you’re not honest and transparent, you risk negotiations getting sidelined, sometimes over a minor sticking point because you have already damaged your credibility. In the labor movement, we’re taught that in negotiations labor wants to build on what they have and management negotiates from zero, as though it’s the first time we’ve sat across the table from each other. The union will ask for the moon and settle for the stars. But they will never ask for more than the company budget can bear because it’s counterproductive for the employer to go out of business.

Information is key. I was in charge of PR in a strike against AT&T in 1989 and our efforts ensured that members knew what was at stake. We held regular rallies, put out a daily newsletter to the picket lines, held interviews with media, and visited picket lines to discuss the issues, offer encouragement, and took it down to the lowest levels to show how important negotiations were to rank and file.
