Creating a training plan without proper assessment to really understand your skills and tools gap will probably lead to creating a plan that will not upskill you. Observation is so powerful too. I had moved on to this organization where they were using tools I had only heard of and I have never practically used myself. And that is normal for any BA. Just have a learning mindset. This enabled me to create a better training plan for myself and the leadership of this organization was amazing with providing me all the training I needed to excel.

2 Define your learning objectives

The next step is to define your learning objectives based on the results of your needs analysis. Your learning objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), and aligned with your career goals and aspirations. A clear timeline is essential for any learning objective. Our work can be complex and tiring, and other distractions here and there, plus our families, can easily derail us from fully completing our learning objectives. To avoid this, it is important to set a timeline and break them down into daily smaller, learning objectives. If we find ourselves getting sidetracked, do not feel bad, just jump back into your plan and continue taking action. With a little planning and effort, we can successfully complete any learning objective.

3 Choose your learning methods

The third step is to choose the most appropriate and effective learning methods for your objectives. There are many options available, such as online courses, workshops, webinars, podcasts, books, articles, blogs, videos, or mentoring. You should consider your learning style, preferences, budget, availability, and resources when selecting your learning methods. You should also look for reputable sources, qualified instructors, and relevant content that can meet your needs.

The fourth step is to plan your learning activities in a structured and realistic way. I always try to guide any aspiring BA with a proper gap analysis first, as below- 1. Understanding their current experience, job role, existing knowledge etc. 2. Understanding why they are keen to move into a Business Analyst role. 3. Understanding their expectations. Based on this analysis, I decide 1. What all guidance is needed and prepare points for it. 2. Which time slot would be suitable 3. What all sessions will be needed. 4. Where is an extra effort needed to meet the expectations. This gap analysis can always be a better approach for anyone who just don’t want to impart knowledge but a qualitative knowledge.
