Machine learning for damage detection in civil engineering structures presents both challenges and benefits. When researching methods for a pavement management project, we interviewed a company that does pavement condition assessments using drone flights that employ a machine learning algorithm to rate the pavement. It was over 2 years ago, and it looked promising but at the time, it was too new. Hopefully soon, that type of work will be more accurate and inexpensive enough to become a real alternative to in-person assessments.

This is a very interesting topic with a significant research gap in the field. I am currently working on the detection of axial compression load capacity of a column reinforced with both steel and FRP rebars using machine learning. In this research, I am developing an Artificial Neural Network algorithm, and the data is obtained from column testing in our laboratory. This approach proves to be efficient and accurate, providing a valuable tool for civil engineers. However, a potential drawback is that many civil engineers lack knowledge in programming languages. Despite this, the integration of machine learning in civil engineering is a promising avenue that could bring substantial benefits to the industry in the future.
