How can you use lecturing to promote social and emotional learning in students?

Lecture method per sie has no issue. The lecturer makes the difference. Students will engage when the lecturer is able to get them to roll. The lecturer can facilitate learning through interaction. So the more the lecturer is able to socially interact the better the learning and obviously the outcome. In my many years of offering lecturers I have realised the valued skill I have improved over time is the capability to connect, socially interact and by giving examples that are relevant to the students settings.

A student learns and gets directly affected/inspired/motivated in the class if the lecturer has an effective communication skill. Knowledge of only subject matter is not enough as we are nurturing the future society in the classroom, who decides as in which environment we would be living in future that is about 5-10 years from now. We might have the power & authority right now being in this position but in future this students will have the power to change the society. A career with good moral values is as good as an organic cultivation required for sustainable development of our society, environment and all the living beings. A lecturer must take the responsibility to balance both learnings and ethical development of the students.

I consider myself fortunate that I had amazing lecturers during my graduation and postgraduate days. Their lectures motivated me as well as were prime reason of my interest in the subjects which I pursued for my doctoral research and eventually in my career as a educator and researcher. I feel lecturing is a most powerful tool to communicate with students. When I am in a class and I see the twinkle in my student's eye when the concept is understood really well by the student...Wallah that makes my day. A good lecture is good for both the student and the lecturer. I feel I learn from every single lecture I deliver.

I teach the future of law to graduate law students about to start legal practice. For me, it is about reconciling legal concepts and ideas with the practical experience I have as a lawyer, law firm principal and legal futurist in a way that shows them practically what is ahead for them in the profession, and for them to be able to think critically about this as well as to be the narrative in their own futures of law. The fact that I still also practise means they are getting first hand insights into the real issues of the day, which they tell me they value as well as hearing about my war stories.

One of the ways to prepare a lecture with SEL components is to encourage students to practise empathy. With the use of visual aids and videos, we can help our students visualize other people’s points of view. Encouraging students to share their opinions with each other will also help them acquire SEL skills. Lastly and most importantly, always establish a safe space for diverse opinions without any fear of judgment or criticism.

Reaching out to young people means understanding them, and for that you have to listen to them. So if we stand up there and talk, we won't be able to listen to them. How am I supposed to encourage them when I'm talking and they're supposed to listen? I am a friend of learning support and SEL works better there than in frontal teaching.

Before delivering a lecture, thorough planning is essential, ensuring alignment with learning objectives and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) goals. I will usually start the class with clear guidelines on how we want our learning space to be. For e.g., I’d invite students to co-create what a “safe and brave space” for learning would look and be like, incorporating trauma-informed and neuro-inclusive principles to establish a safe and inclusive environment to foster trust and openness. I model active listening and compassionate communication during group discussions or reflection sessions at the end of each class, to help students internalise the material. Allow for authentic feedback to gauge the lecture's impact and improve future sessions. Where appropriate, I’d incorporate role-playing activities to actively involve the students in practicing SEL skills in a supportive setting.

After making a proper lesson plan and incorporating ideas regarding SEL along with practical examples a lecture can be prepared. Some important examples in lecture need to be added such as developing self awareness, promoting positive behavior, managing relationships and resolving conflicts.

Creating a good classroom atmosphere is really important during lectures. You can do this by using clear words, hand movements, and pictures to keep students interested. Change how fast you talk and how loud you are to keep things exciting. It's also good to ask students for their thoughts and answer their questions. Pay attention to how they're feeling and acting, and adjust your teaching if needed. Giving compliments, cheering them on, and helping them improve can really help students feel good. And don't forget to celebrate their successes to keep them motivated.

Create a supportive environment by establishing clear expectations, norms, and rules, and respecting the perspectives of all students. Use positive reinforcement and active listening techniques to encourage open discussion and promote a sense of community. Encourage self-awareness and self-management by inviting students to reflect on their own emotions and behavior, and providing strategies for managing emotions and stress. Teach interpersonal skills, like empathy, collaboration, and conflict resolution, through role-playing, group activities, and case studies.

As a teacher, it is very useful to know how the course is progressing through regular feedback from students. This provides a general idea of how well they are following the subject. One of my university professors used to ask us for our weekly reflections at the end of each week. At that time, I thought he was just trying to pass the time and wasn't in the mood to teach on Saturdays. However, I later realized that what he taught has stayed with me even after 15 years. I now understand that he was gauging the pulse of student learning and then tailoring the next week's lectures accordingly.

Incorporating SEL into lectures not only enhances academic learning but also prepares students for the fast-growing and AI-driven workplace by fostering adaptability, empathy, and teamwork skills. As an expert in business development and strategy, I've observed that these soft skills are increasingly sought after in government and technology sectors. Encouraging reflection and application of lecture content helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical, real-world application, a crucial skill in today's rapidly evolving job market.

During lectures, provide students the chance to consider their own feelings, ideas, and actions. Urge them to consider seriously the effects of their behavior on other people and the ways in which they may alter for the better.
