1 ADDIE Model

The ADDIE model is a widely used instructional design model that stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. You can use it to guide your own learning process by identifying your learning needs, goals, and gaps; planning objectives, content, activities, and assessments; creating or gathering materials and tools; executing the learning plan; and reviewing outcomes and feedback. Ask yourself questions such as: What do you want to learn and why? How will you measure your progress? What formats and media will you use? When and where will you learn? Did you achieve your learning goals? How did you improve your knowledge and skills? With these steps in mind, you can ensure a successful learning experience.

This is how I've used ADDIE in my personal learning and self development. Analysis: I've analysed feedback and growth areas. Identified my gaps and made goals of overcoming them. Design: I then designed a plan as actionable measures I can take to achieve the goals. This design would include learnings and also ideas that would make my personal work process better. Develop: I develop as per need. This might include an Excel sheet to make my processes/personal work better/manageable. Implement: I complete learnings. Use the sheet for my self tracking and for self-governed process. Evaluation: Evaluate of how the learnings helped me in my personal work and the impact of developed processes.

Instructional design processes - whether you use ADDIE, SAM, universal design for learning, or another framework entirely are by their nature about learning. By following them, you will inevitably increase your own learning and development. Think of it this way: an instructional designer has the privilege of working firsthand with subject matter experts and digging deep into their knowledge. You'll absorb a lot about fields you never expected, and in the process probably learn a great deal about your own interests that you want to grow into more.

When you are setting outcomes for your own learning, don't forget to set goals that make sense for you and the various commitments you have in your life. The objectives you set for your own learning are inherently personal, and it is okay if your goals look very different from those of others.

2 SAM Model

The SAM model, which stands for Successive Approximation Model, is a popular instructional design model based on the idea of iterative design. This means that you create and improve your learning materials and tools through multiple cycles of prototyping, testing, and feedback. In order to support your own learning, you can follow these steps: Savvy Start, which involves defining the scope and expectations of your learning project; Design Phase, which involves designing objectives, content, activities, and assessments; Development Phase, which involves creating or selecting resources and methods; as well as Iterative Cycles, which involve testing and improving materials and tools. Additionally, you should evaluate your learning materials and collect feedback from yourself and others to make changes and improvements.

3 Learning Strategies

Besides using instructional design models, you can also employ various learning strategies to improve your own learning. Learning strategies are the techniques and methods used to process, retain, and apply information. Some of the most effective strategies include spaced repetition, which involves reviewing the same information at different intervals; retrieval practice, which requires recalling information from your memory without looking at the source; elaboration, which involves explaining and connecting the information to prior knowledge and experience; interleaving, which involves mixing different topics or skills within a session; and dual coding, which combines verbal and visual information. By utilizing instructional design models and strategies, you can plan, implement, and reflect on your own learning projects more effectively and efficiently. Additionally, you can customize your learning experience to suit your preferences, needs, and context.

When considering your own plans for learning and self-development, do not restrict yourself to topics within your career field. As an instructional designer, I have found that there is a lot to learn (and in turn, apply) from the fields of information architecture, web/UX design, marketing, and game development.

There is another most talked about model called the AGILE model. The idea behind Agile is to create a more “agile”, nimble, flexible, and, adaptable design process for eLearning. One important thing no matter which model we follow is to keep it iterative. Rework is important, this is how we make our work better and better. There are three phases to it, alpha, beta, and gold.

A best learning plan for self or a project would be something that integrates elements of many learning models. For example, phases of ADDIE and iterative cycle for continuous feedback and development. It can also have elements of a problem-centric learning model which is built around as a solution to a central learning problem/learning gap. Lastly, in today's world where there's too much content/information/options to choose from it is remember to keep a learning solution personal or otherwise adaptive. Suitable/tailor-made to self.
