1 GPRS basics

GPRS is based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) standard, which is the most popular mobile network standard in the world. GSM divides the available frequency band into channels, and each channel is further divided into time slots. Each time slot can carry one voice call or one data packet. GPRS uses the same channels and time slots as GSM, but it can combine multiple time slots to increase the data rate and capacity. GPRS can also switch between channels and time slots dynamically, depending on the network conditions and the demand.

2 GPRS evolution

GPRS was first introduced in 1997 as a 2.5G technology, meaning that it was an enhancement of the 2G GSM network. It offered a maximum data rate of 171.2 kbps, which was much faster than the 9.6 kbps of GSM. However, as the demand for mobile data grew, GPRS was soon surpassed by newer technologies, such as EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), and HSPA (High Speed Packet Access). These technologies are collectively known as 3G, and they offer data rates of up to 42 Mbps. The latest generation of mobile networks is 4G, or LTE (Long Term Evolution), which can reach speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

For IoT, it would be more accurate to talk about NB-IoT as a cellular communication technology that is built on top of GPRS principles and techniques. In this case, there are strong arguments for its benefits as it is designed to be a low power consumption, wide coverage, low cost, and large capacity technologies for different IoT deployment scenarios and applications.

4 GPRS challenges for IoT

One of the main challenges is the network congestion and latency. The challenges have to be classified in different ways. There are those related to the protocol itself (signalling overhead, security, scalability, quality of service, etc.) and other related to the deployment and that nature of the applications that use it (real-time, type of data, etc.). Security issues range from the hardware design up to the end-to-end data authentication and integrity and they are relatively common to all communication protocols and technologies with certain specificities and differences here and there.
