Geospatial data are important in biodiversity wether they are vector (GPS points,biodiversity hotspot points, watercourse lines, preserved natural spaces polygones) or raster ( Digital Elevation Model, satellite imagery for NDVI) We can use several formats of data like shapefile and GeoJSON for vector data and GeoTIFF for raster data

Geospatial data is as simple as it sounds - literally ANY information that has a definitive location attached to it could be considered geospatial data. These data points can be displayed and then analyzed based upon their physical location. Generally GIS software is needed to view/create geospatial data.

Geospatial data is increasingly important for biodiversity research and modeling. Data such as GPS locations, DEMs, impervious surfaces, Landsat imagery, high resolution ortho imagery for time series and a plethora of more spatial data can be utilized in creating landcover maps that then can be used for habitat suitability maps for certain species. This allows us as conservationists/biologists to help preserve and conserve areas of high biodiversity or find areas that need protection in order to protect certain areas.

There many ways geospatial data can be analyzed in GIS. Some of the more specific tools and analyzation techniques I have personally used is looking at the cell signatures of Landsat imagery across different years to observe changes in landcover across years which also can be conducted using timeseries imagery. This data then can be utilized in certain analysis tools such as running a Random Forests analysis in ArcPro to obtain a prediction map for landcover utilizing a multitude of geospatial layers. Many researchers use a combination of GIS and also extract cell values from geospatial layers to be utilized in statistical analysis in R to generate prediction maps, etc.

With my experience, most overlook how indigenous knowledge can have a representation of location attributes. Some indigenous literature and songs incorporate locations of hunting grounds, sacred rituals, dangerous places, and territories and boundaries to name a few. It is up to us to extract and put the locations on a map , and check with the indigenous people if the representation is correct. GIS can then help visualize and store this indigenous knowledge for generations to come. That being said, utmost respect is necessary - most indigenous people are wary, and consider us outsiders, so it may be beneficial for us to teach them mapping skills instead, which is also a way of acknowledging the ownership of the knowledge.
