If you want community, then be very careful with competitive dynamics! Too much competition totally backfires. First get the purpose of gamification straight, before introducing points and leaderboards at random.

Before starting to gamify anything, always wonder what you are trying to achieve through gamification. Is this really something that needs to be gamified, does it make sense? Don't gamify just for the sake of gamification. IF it makes sense to gamify, then choose your purpose and your mechanics wisely. That is a lot easier of your purpose is clear.

Ask the question whether it is gamification or game-based learning you need. There is a difference. Both have their place but need to be used in the right way.

Easiest way is to adopt a game that already exists and just play it. For example, schools and companies around the world use our GoVenture simulation games for learning and teamwork. Interesting example -- One instructor had a team of 3 people playing in a classroom together on the same computer while they also zoomed in 2 teammates from other locations -- the 5 of them ran a virtual business together, each taking on a different role.
