I've found that most folks, if looking at trends, just focus on the obvious ones. Linear forecasts based on what they know today. But the most forward-thinking strategists I know stress test their plans against multiple, diverging future scenarios that could unfold. Because who knows, right? This approach isn't new. But you can find the best version of it in Peter Schwartz's 1991 book, "The Art of the Long View". It'll train you to imagine revolutionary shifts early that others dismiss as obscure possibilities. Think of all the pre-iPhone skeptics who never thought people would stare at little black bricks all day. The key is to imagine expansive future timelines way outside current assumptions, analyzing signals, probing uncertainty.

From my experience, doing in-depth trend research is the first step to reaching an effective foresight strategy. One must scan and understand the context, besides using methodologies to dive deep into the hidden layers of culture and the spirit of the time. Looking to the present and the past, understanding mindsets and the zeitgeist, and identifying patterns, and signs of change will provide a competitive advantage for business strategy.

This is what they mean when they say that founders must be dreamers. Being able to predict 5 different directions that any of your decisions may take you is a skill you pick up in the initial years which can hold you in great stead as a founder.

Making linear forecasts based on the recent past is useful but super limited. Disruption = everything everywhere all at once. Even though history repeats the future almost always surprises us. 30+ years ago scenario-planner Peter Schwartz introduced principles in "The Art of the Long View" to better prepare organizations for disruption way out on the fringes that linear approaches miss. At times taking action first allows for strategies to adjust based on the circumstances as they present themselves. Strategies must allow for flexibility when called for.

By positioning mindsets in the past / present / future, one can better plan strategies, products as well as communication efforts that can enable "future" mindsets to emerge at the right time and help innovation adoption.

Sometimes you keep it simple. Always have a plan B and C in case your best-case scenario doesn't work out. I found that being ready with a backup plan sometimes get me ahead of the game going forward.
